I'm sort of confused by the question. In general most 1/2 guard sweeps, that I know of, require you to attack from your side. Meaning that you need to be on your hip and not on your back. How you get there (hip out, whip up, you get a lucky break, etc) is just a means to getting up onto your hip.

I just want to know if all the sweeps, when in lockdown with double unders, require the whip up to work? I simply mean that when in lockdown, do you have to whip up? - gpounds translator

Whip is one way to get to yr side when you have lock down. Sometimes if the guy is too big or whatever, instead of moving him I move me and creep down using my undercooks etc
If you are in half guard you need to be on yr side to be effective like AJ says.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "Lockdown" or "grapevine" seemed frowned upon by more traditional-er schools because it was looked at more of a stall than anything else.

What Eddie did was take an exceptional control position and allow you to sweep and attack without giving up the control. That pretty much all starts at the whip up.

While on your back you are supporting all the guys weight and pretty stuck - especially if you are a lightweight.

If you have over under instead of double under (over on the lockdown side) you can fake sliding your hips out (like you would in traditional half guard) and when he tries to push your hips back to the mat c-cup the inside of the thigh and use his energy to sweep him to the side of the lockdown. If your asking because your having trouble with your whipup Ari has a good post on troubleshooting it on his site.

Sometimes its hard (alot of times) to get double unders against blue and purple belts who are bigger than you. Now that I roll in Gi pants however my half guard rarely gets passed......I never knew it would make such a difference rolling in gi pants.....i like it......
