Its made a huge difference in my game. I don't even worry if they are defending well anymore, I just switch my grip and get the tap! Denny has also got me to use that grip with my NS chokes and its made a big difference.

you can and should be doing that as well with the 10 finger if you can get it, makes it super tight and very hard to defend. Also 10 finger with arm in is a killer.

I've got to drill it. It looks effective, haven't had a chance to play yet : )

I'm going to stay open minded and give it a shot, esppecially from the failed hip bump sweep. BUT, I have gotten very, very good at Marcelo's Guillotine, and right now that one is a bear trap for me. I never thought I would get any choke more than the Darce and the RNC, but right now I'm getting countless Marcelo/hip-drop/elbow-flare Guillotines. In my opinion it's the best way to Guillotine someone, because you can finish it from your back, half-guard, side control, and the mount, and flow pretty easily between the positions.
I am going to give Denny's a strong shot though. You can never have enough ways to choke people. ;)

Denny introduced me to it about a year ago. It took some reps to deprogram the old way of doing it but its the only way I'm teaching my students now. Hip bump to Dennys killatine (that's what we've nick named it) to 100% works real good to.

Rep it up... I'm still having some growing pains with it but I'll get it hammered down shortly ;)

I can't even remember the last time I finished a guillotine. I saw a video of Garcia completely owning high level guys with it. I need to rethink adding it back to the game. Such a simple move yet so versatile.

The same Guillotine he hit on Kron Gracie is at 1:27. The final sub at the end of the video is absolutely brutal!

The choke he pulls off at around 28seconds is the guillotine we have been talking about, see how he puts his elbow on the shoulder and back.

Here is a great free version of the Marcelo Guillotine, straight from Matt Arroyo after a private lesson with Marcelo Garcia. If you want to see Garcia do this in rolling and matches, look in the Marcelo thread and watch the 2nd and 3rd video of the rolling session with Ryan Hall, where he hits at least 4 or 5. The matches with George Sotiropoulos, Mike Fowler, the video called "Marcelinho", Jake Shields, Kron Gracie in a HL, K-Taro Nakamura, "Marcelo Garcia Training", and the Ben Askren rolling clip.
You can also read the write up at MGinaction that I did about the Marcelo Guillotine in that thread.
On to the choke: (you can't see the puke. It's not gross.)

I have to play with the specifics this week. I have a variation that I picked up watching Marcelo videos where I place the elbow up as Neale mentioned, but I use my forearm/back of the hand to twist/wrench/compress the jaw/neck as well as get the strangle (it's more appropriate to say "strangle" as it's a blood flow sub, not a wind/air sub :) ). This makes it PAINFUL as well as cuts off the blood. I get a 2 or 3 second sub using this, and I nail it from half guard, full, Prison Guard, and the failed hip bump. I basically modified a catch technique. I have to video it.

Is there a name for the grip Denny uses? I was thinking of calling it over the top grip. For some reason the Stallone arm wrestling movie popped up in my thought process while working it yesterday....

I saw a vid of Kenny Florian demonstrating something similar quite a while back but for the life of me I can't find it now. I'll keep looking. I just learned the grip right before I went out with surgery so I haven't had the chance to try it out yet. I'm excited about it though!

Imagine grabbing the blade edge of your hand (pinky side) then reach all the way around, so you have an upside down gable grip sort of, so the choking wrist is palm towards your opponent and the back of your hand is facing your chest. Your non choking arm goes up to 12 o'clock elbow pointing to the sky and your choking elbow goes down to 6 o'clock.
Make sense?

Denny showed us the guilotine at a seminar in Omaha at Derek Stewarts 10th Planet School. We brought it back and showed a couple of the guys at our gym the 10 finger and one of our boys ended up taking it to Naga in colorado and using it during his absolute matches. He literally buckled the guy at his knees, as if someone knocked the wind out of him. He ended up going on to win the absolute and was very thankful for having it at his disposal.

The final sub in that video is indeed brutal - it scared me almost as much as that scene in the Watchmen right at the start where Ozymandias fights the Comedian, and the Comedian fails to land a single hit on him.
