Effectiveness of lockdown

Hello~ I've been training BJJ for around 9 months and I received my blue belt not long ago.
Our school usually trains in gi jiu-jitsu but we also train no-gi jiu-jitsu during the summer.
I was hoping to find a school teaching 10th planet system but it seems that there isn't one here in Korea and the one I found here in Seoul is kinda too faraway from my area cos the gym is right outside Seoul.
About a few months ago I've been practicing Eddie Bravo's techniques through his DVDs with a friend of mine.
Nowadays, I don't really have partner to train rubber guard and so on cos people doesn't give a damn about Eddie.
Anyway~ my question is it seems that whip up and other techniques from half guard are not that effective when used in real competitions or during the rolling session.
What do you guys think about it?
I'm not here to critisize about the technique or anything.
I'm just here to seek everybody's opinion and find ways to improve my way of training.
So if you have any opinions, please feel free to comment on it!!!

In my opinion is all about timing and practice, Practice

Jasonic: this video is of my 10 year old daughter using the lockdown after only an hour of practice at home before we went to the gym. As you can see her sparring partner is much bigger than her and she always have trouble with him passing her guard, but this night after we put in an hour of practice before going to the gym....he was having problem breaking her guard. And she even tried the electric chair on him. Of course we need more work on it, but its a great start. Practice it my friend, and use it. If a 10 year old girl can do it, you can do it too.

W/ higher level people training w/ the gi i find it harder because when they flatten you out the they can smash you and grip onto you so when you try to whip up its sort of blocked. You should still be able to hit it, but if someone sees it coming and can balance their weight correctly it could be a little more difficult. Thats just my opinion from what I have personaly encountered.

The lockdown is my go-to man. If a guy is really good i usually try lockdown first.the clinch from there just shuts most people down. Plus you have sooooo much control with the lockdown in. Its not the only thing i do in half guard, but if its a tough or serious roll im going there for sure.

At my new gym I can't do shit from lockdown. But then I saw another guy killing with it. I realized that it was me and not the lockdown. I was just letting dudes settle too much with their smashing and then not aggressively attacking with the lockdown. I totally stalled out on an old school sweep today, and then getting paranoid about letting go of the lockdown to go to dogfight.

lockdown is a must know.....i was caught in a guilotine when i had lockdown and the only reason i escaped is because of the lockdown whip up. lockdown is the only halfguard i use anymore(unless im desperate to save position)

I think you're not doing it right. Eddie hits electric chairs on black belts. Louis Ho hits electric chairs in competition. So do a number of us. The lockdown is VERY effective if done right. The whip up and fat whip are supper effective if done right.

The key word is, "if done right." I remember trying to do whip up from observation. I couldn't. Then I learned it the right way from coach Herzog, and suddenly it became easy and effective.

That would be a time to go stomp to coccoon, don't you think? The lockdown is effective.

I'll list what's great about lockdown in order. (In my opinion)

1. It's an easy way to prevent your guard from getting passed.
2. It's a great way to go from flat on your back up to your side
3. It provides entry to a number of subs, sweeps, and transitions
4. A lot of guys still aren't familiar with it, so you still have the element of surprise
5. There are a lot of myths in how to defeat the lockdown so you still have the element of surprise
6. Electric chairs are the bomb son!


I'm telling you OP, if you know what you're doing with it, it's good money.

He said he he's been training for 9 months and got his blue not long ago.im going to go out on a limb and say he got his blue too early and he isn't doing lockdown right. I hit lockdown whip up all the time on bigger guys. People can say its not effective but if u rep it long enough you'll be good at it. Same thing when people bash rubber guard , they say it doesn't work but they also haven't put enough reps into it to make it a good technique.

What about lockdown in a Gi? I find it's tough because they can collar choke you even with the lockdown on. Is it a no Gi only move?

Wait a min y'all telling me there is another way to use half guard besides the lockdown. I need to study up on this lol. Na I use lockdown every time. I like using it and the deep half guard together given the right opportunity. But takes lots of practice.

Lockdown itself is more effective on gi pants because there is more friction causing it much harder to escape it

I went through a phase in my journey where I questioned the effectiveness of the lockdown as well then I started training with Eddie not only did I feel the power and effectiveness of the Lockdown with him firsthand I also started learning seeing and feeling all the details from him in class the key thing to ask yourself is do you know the details? If so are you actually applying them? I would be pretty sure you dont remember there are also other options from the lockdown as well do your research and put in proper reps there is a reason why everyone knows Eddie is going to pull lockdown and he still kills with it!!!!!!

I found Ari's vid from submissions101 as probably the easiest other than the MTRG dvd

And I was pretty good(for a white belt) before I started studying the system but since there has been nothing but gains. I can't stress the number of times a few simple evil rainbows from lockdown saved me from being subbed and gotten me the sweep

Blue belt in under 9 months? Holy shit! Nice work. :-)

I was using the lockdown with a very high rate of sucess for years in the Gi before I went no-Gi. In some ways it was easier back then because not may people new what the "f" I was doing. I was also doing tons of different lapel chokes from the Lockdown.

The Lockdown is nearly unstoppable against a guy who knows how to play it. You can avoid it, yes. But if you know how to control your opponent from there it's pretty much a guaranteed sweep. I believe the Electric Chair is the most powerful sweep in jiu jitsu. I've used it effectively against every level of player that I've ever rolled with or competed against. Some guys are great at avoiding that game. Have a solid contingency plan for such animals.

As for the Whip Up, if it isn't working for you it's likely a timing issue on your part. You've been grappling for 9 months; I think it's fair to say you've probably got quite a few more years on the mat before you develop the kind of sensitivity, awareness, and timing needed to begin understanding the beauty of sweeps and the principles that lie underneath them.

Don't give up on it. I promise it'll make your half guard game amazing and powerful if you will commit to learning it. It is, in my opinion, the most high percentage game you can play from the bottom.

To share my own experiences with the lockdown, I started using the lockdown after about 6 months of training. I spent every rolling session getting swept and tapped, swept and tapped, over and over again. I began using the lockdown after I got a copy 'The Twister' just to experiment after seeing how well it worked for Eddie on his road to ADCC. My first atempt at the lockdown was against a bluebelt about my size, I pulled half guard, slapped the lockdown on and stretched his leg out, I could feel him panic instantly, whipped up to my side, grabbed the foot and pulled off an oldskool sweep, first attempt! I quickly lost side control and got tapped, but that's besides the point, for me, the lockdown is now a vital part of my game and if it wasn't for the lockdown I doubt I'd be anywhere close to where I am now.

If nothing else, your opponents knowing you have the lockdown in you game, it gives them something else to think about.

In my relatively short BJJ experience, a technique without proper application is pretty worthless. I have 10 months training and have started integrating 10PJJ into my game and the lockdown works great - I use it mostly for frustrating my opponent and getting to my deep half game.

In one of the first 3 or 4 MTS episodes, Eddie makes reference to the fact that you need to work when using the lockdown and you can't just stall or you'll get passed.

Aww you guys, I can't wait for the holidays to be over to go back to the gym and see more of cora's lockdown. Now she has 3 go to moves, before it was just the triangle and rubber guard, now with the lockdown, we. just opened up a whole new game for her. Now more than ever I have so much confidence in her game. And this excite her to work even harder.

Yoga & pilates is a good option to improve your BJJ training.

I've used the lockdown to peel myself out of more gullioteens than I can remember... sometimes if im in a gulli and cant manuver to the side ill try to secure lockdown so i can just pull them down, it will commonly make them let go of my head or in the least buy me some breathing room (my long legs make it easier to peel people downward away from my head)

Not as simple as it sounds, I need to do a few evil rainbows it will get you the sweep but you got to make sure you get to side control right from there bc they still got the guilli your just on top now
