Oil Pulling?? Anyone know if this is legit??

Nice, a girl from work sent me that article and I'd never heard of it, figured you guys would know. Definitely going to try it, sounds like there's a wide range of benefits.

How hard is it to not swallow any and how brutal is it if you do?

I heard this on EBR, can you feel a difference in your body?

Sounds sketchy. Any reputable medical documentation on it?

Exactly which toxins are they claiming that the oil binds to? It could not detoxify anything except your mouth, maybe.

I'm skeptical. But with enough solid evidence I'd be convinced. I like the idea of detoxifying with something that simple. Not sure if I wanna hold oil in my mouth for 20 minutes just to try it.

What toxins are in your mouth anyway? Sure maybe it helps clean your teeth somehow but "detoxify" sounds like bullshit.

I dont doubt for a second that it works... I'm not skeptical at all, really.. But wouldn't listerine or simple peroxide and mint do the job better? Why not replace your toothbrush with frayed bamboo also? Im ceryain it works, its all natural 100% organic..and it was the way to go 1500 years ago. But isnt that badass oral B toothbrush with the angled bristles and rubber inserts and all that shit gonna do a better job? Lol. Yeah oil in your mouth will clean it.. But there's better modern (and still all natural) ways of cleaning your mouth. 20 min of oil? Thats a long time. After a year (if once a day), you will have spent 121.6667 hours cleaning your mouth. I'll brush for 2 minutes instead. After a year i will have spent 12.16667 hours.. I'm also not Mr. All natural, all organic, nature hippie.. If that's your thing, then use oil mouthwash.. ;).

My mom told me bout this two weeks ago. Sounds right, I think it also helps prevent cavities. I was thinking about starting to do it myself. Coconut oil has a million uses so..makes sense.

It works well for me, but I've only done it twice (coconut oil), so I'm no expert. Time literally flies by, and you'd be surprised at how clean your mouth feels after.

Sure, I do it too. Oil pulling is effective at significantly decreasing your levels of negative oral bacteria, specifically Candida and Streptococcus mutans (the principle bacteria responsible for tooth decay). It also helps to remove plaque and other oral debris.

Here are the results of a study which compared oil pulling with the use of standard chlorhexidine-based mouthwash in regards to S. mutans elimination:

Wait, seriously?

I've heard all the stuff about fluoride (usually in the context of how it's added to municipal water supplies) but this is new to me. I've always thought aluminum oxide as a polishing compound was ridiculously overkill in toothpaste. I'm actually reading some stuff about commercial toothpaste as I write this, and you're starting to sound significantly less crazy.

These studies have problems, not just my opinion. Sample size, experimental design (in vitro) ect. One study had only 10 replicates for the experimental treatments, thats laughable. Intro to biology projects have more replicates than that. Not sure if its a funding problem or if it is because they were done in India and the sciences are not strong there? Either way there is no statically significant evidence as of yet that oil pulling has any benefit. I have a hunch that it does in fact have some benefit and future studies that are better designed will show this (but it will be minor and less than a commercial mouthwash if used for 20 minutes). Also they used sunflower or sesame oil so there very well could be a difference.

I feel like this is sketchy, but im gonna try it with olive oil like a true G. Also when you spit the oil out, do you then garggle mouth wash? i dont get it.

Thought this thread was gonna be about some secret version of the oil check I often see wrestlers do. Oil pulling sounds a lot worse than oil checking

Traditionally you would rinse with saltwater. I thought it was slightly odd that the Indian researchers did not do this as part of the treatment.

When I was young, I didn't clean my teeth at all. I was a pretty cynical kid who thought everyone was full of shit, so naturally I tended to do the opposite of what I was expected to do. Never had any problems. Started using mouth wash in my teens and it messed up the whole flora of my mouth. I then found out that alcohol-based mouth rinses dry out your mouth and create the perfect environment for bacterial growth. I ended up doing water/baking soda rinses.

Keep researching. Fluoride is such a small part of it, yet it does serve as a great example of how something can be so blatantly screwed up that it must be planned that way.

There are plenty of studies showing the harmful effects. Even Harvard agrees that it lowers IQ and causes brain cell damage. But who cares about all that. It should be common sense...

They tell you that you need to put a chemical in your mouth twice a day to prevent tooth decay? Does that mean that our teeth simply rotted out of our heads automatically before the divine miracle of fluoride was showered down upon us (literally, every time you take a shower in most major municipalities)? That seems a little genetically ridiculous to me, especially considering that isolated tribal people of today have the best teeth in the world. But let's ignore this. Let us avoid discussing the causes of tooth decay (like diet) and focus our energies on this chemical band-aid that all humans must orally self-administer at least twice a day. And that's not even enough. We need to consume it every time we have a glass of water. For our teeth. Make sure you have eight glasses a day.

Thanks for the input, Aaron. I didn't perform any of the studies, so I can't attest to their validity. I only have anecdotal evidence. It does what I want it to do. It leaves a clean, fresh feeling in the mouth and stops odor. Since mouthwash is unnecessary to begin with, oil pulling is only an optional addition to hygiene anyway (I just happen to enjoy it). All I can say is try it. You like it, continue. Don't like it, stop. Doesn't matter.

I would like to experiment with different oils in the future though. Some might have more rapid rates of emulsification.

Saltwater's good, like Aaron said. Also, baking soda/water, or just plain water. Watch out with the olive oil though. Many supermarket olive oils are not true virgin and contain harmful chemicals which are NOT required to be printed on the bottle.

With a completely natural diet there is probably less need for fluoride.
Of course humans reproduce long before our teeth rot out, naturally, so there is little or no chance for natural selection to act. That's why it makes sense "genetically".
Just like table salt or water high levels can have negative effects. The Harvard study is famously flawed and was high jacked by anti-fluoride activist. They looked at children in China and Mongolia who were drinking water on a daily basis that had 10 times (some more up to 40X) the amount of fluoride targeted by the FDA. The researchers themselves state in the paper that the results may not be statically significant as the amount of IQ effect detected was within the margin of error of the IQ test.

I dont think the government should put anything in the water. I think that people eating a completely natural diet to which they are genetically adapted and using traditional methods of oral care probably have little use for fluoride unless they want o keep their into later ages like 50+.

Ive never had a a cavity and I have always brushed my teeth with commercial tooth paste, not that personal experience is really worth a shit.

There's a doctor I follow on facebook and this is what he said about it.

Oil pulling is a hot topic again. Here is what you need to know:

Almost every day, I put a large tablespoon of unrefined, cold-pressed coconut oil in my mouth and slosh it around for 15-30 minutes. Sometimes longer, actually. I have indeed seen an improvement in the health of my gums from doing this. Some claim it also whitens your teeth and kills bad oral bacteria.

Don't freak out about the idea of bacteria in your mouth. Don't hear the word "bacteria" and think KILL KILL KILL. It's supposed to be there and is part of immunity and digestion. Just like the rest of your body, however, that bacteria has to remain in balance. The health of your immune system in general is the most important factor in this, but good oral hygiene is needed to do the rest.

It is also suggested that oil pulling can "pull" toxins from the body through the blood vessels under the tongue. This is highly unlikely as any toxins that would bind to the oil would have to be fat soluble, and the body doesn't allow those to just roam free in the bloodstream. They are stored in fat cells.

I would additionally like to address the notion that oil pulling keeps mouth bacteria in check, thus freeing up the immune system to focus on other issues, thereby improving general health. This is a nice notion, but one which is also unfounded scientifically. A strong immune system is nearly impenetrable to invading organisms, so that is where our focus should lie above all.

So overall, use oil pulling for daily mouth care, but I wouldn't depend on it doing much more than that. The idea that it can cure sinus problems and headaches is unfounded and unlikely. Perhaps research will prove otherwise one day, but until then, this is my opinion.
