I learned something like this off of a Rolled Up video with Gokor. As long as the person isn't locking your far shoulder, hooking that leg is a really good defense. Gokor shows it differently so I guess there are lots of variations that you can pair together with other arm bar escapes. But hooking that leg is a really good piece of the puzzle. Basically, hook the leg, and get rid of the other leg over your face. I have like 4 different ways I do this. Yes, it's because I find myself threatened by armbars often. Hahah. I'm a white belt. Whaddaya expect?
Exactly. Having ways out is helpful. And I reckon that by the time you're a black belt, far from these techniques being unimportant, you're probably doing them without thinking too much (which is why high level players have to work hard to make as few mistakes as possible).
Yeah, man. I'm no where near black belt so my opinion on escapes is irrelevant. But I can say from my experience, I feel like escapes are great for white belt. Truthfully, as a white belt, you're going to find yourself in these situations more often than higher belts. But you want to keep yourself in the game whether it's rolling or competition. Especially in competition. You don't want to lose because you made a dumb mistake and don't know how to get out. Just like no sub is fool proof, no escape is either. Still worth learning IMO.

Skip to 7.49. Gokor shows his variation of the leg hooking armbar escape. Even though I always go for the kneebar, I rarely get it. But like I said, just hooking that leg buys you a lot of time, and gives you a lot of room to escape. Definitely worth using.
Here's another slight variation of the technique, where you "clamp" higher on the leg with your own legs and transition to side mount instead (skip to 2:00 for the technique):

You have to be very careful doing this escape so that YOU don't get knee barred as well . In my gym, as soon as you go for this, my students will throw their left leg (from your head) over your leg you just used to try and counter with a knee bar. To prevent this during your escape, you must get a death grip on their left leg with your left hand as you rip your right arm free. Keep the legs open as you come up. One with your legs and the other by hugging it to your head with your left arm.
Keep it simpler. The "A-Frame" can be used many different ways but it's always been a great arm bar escape. As long as you can get an elbow (you can use either) under a leg, there's a bunch of ways to scoot, roll, ect... play with it. It's a JKD staple. The first 10 seconds of that first video are the most important.
