AHH JUST BE H8erProof and let your actions do your talking
I see your point on #2 but don't think you need to be THAT careful. If you are a brown belt & can't handle getting tapped from time to time -- I don't even know what to say to that. Its just ridiculous, everyone taps. If I am rolling with a higher belt I tap them whenever I can - unless they are injured or its at some shit school & there is no benefit to embarrassing them. For one, often they are often giving me openings & it shows a lack of effort if I don't go in for the kill when I can. Next time they'll roll against me harder which will only up my game. I would definitely say don't goon them with face crush RNCs since it's a dick move outside of comps & its better to strive for proper technique.
But in this scenario - I would let that douche-bag eat a bag of dicks. He's a damn brown belt & he is currently offering no path to respect save proof on the mats (ultimate truth). Excuses are there sure but it sure as hell MUST plant the seed that maybe there is something to be learned after all from your 10P style. It's kinda like beating up a grade-school bully. They may still be a fucktard but they just plain HAVE to show you some respect when you can prove that you have skills. Not doing so just gives them more ammunition to knock the 10P system & to what benefit? There are sometimes people watching & I can't see sandbagging to make this ass-hat's ego get even more inflated. Better to let those in view bear witness to the majesty of what the 10P system has to offer.
As a blue belt I would be thrilled if I got one tap/month from any brown belt - let alone every roll.
Just my 2 cents...
Thought id jump in on this band wagon and share my experience.
There is currently only one 10th planet moon in the UK, I commute to Grimsby twice a week to train with SI,who is a legend, I also train at a local gym which is 5minutes away to get in my reps and more rolling time.
I actually started training jits at my local gym and when i discovered there was a moon in the UK I jumped at the chance to train there. The local instructor became jealous, I was no longer a loyal student and he tried to belittle the system.
He would try and tap me out and prove his style was better and what I was doing didnt work....lol yeah right, this system is proven!
Everything has changed however,he now has warmed to 10p and has me helping out with the class. He became frustrated during our rolls and realised this system worked as he was in a world of pain and didnt know what was happening to him half the time lol
It just takes time, people are ignorant but they will click on their own time if they dont.....fuck them!
Ask him how he feels about 50/50, inverted De la Riva, Tornado Guard, Z-guard, 93-guard (shield guard), single-leg X-guard, X-guard, deep half, Roleta guard, etc. When he inevitably shoots down half or all of them, ask him why he thinks Rafa Mendes, Cobrinha, Marcelo Garcia, Jeff Glover, Xande Ribeiro, etc (I could fill the list all day) are stupid enough to waste their time with these non-traditional new routes. I mean, they are no different than rubber guard or lockdown, it's just another set of techniques. You should ask if he thinks he knows better than all of them
From an outside perspective and from what I can gather, it seems that there is big talk about all people from 10th planet (Eddie especially) do nothing but go around shit talking all forms of JJ aside from 10th planet, have no respect for anyone else, and steal moves.
Most people seem to go into conversations already assuming that 10th planet is just some group of shit talkers who either suck, or are only decent because they are using regular jiujitsu and that none of their techniques can be attributed to 10th planet in any way....
Honestly, it's just something perpetuated by a lot of members of the Gracie family, and a lot of the people who wish they were members of their family.
I've actually seen some of their official channels go out of there way to find videos of 10th planet people losing, and making comments like "Hah, 10th planet never seems to win anything".
So,
I'd really like to see the videos you post, and I hope you end up changing minds more than simply proving someone wrong.
I guess overall my aproach is to tread lightly with opinions on techinques and try to focus on what is being taught at the school. Martial arts is this very weird thing going on, one the one hand we have this student/instructor relationship then on the other we have the customer/business relationship. Let alone all the built in conflict of things like GI/NoGi for example. TDMA & BJJ guys seem GERNERALLY pretty rigid and opinionated on things I think are silly, but if I join their school Im gonna keep quiet and just do my thing. With open rolling or sparring I would try to focus on the techniques they are teaching me. I would have no problem subbing a higher rank/instructor with something they taught but using other stuff might cause conflict.
Think about it like this; you are training at a place that teaches a set system and you are using another system's techniques and successfully. Built in problems imho.
I didnt mean to hijack either. My statements dont really fit exactly what is going on with the OP anyways.
Woops, wrong thread, POST DELETED
I recently encountered my first personal full on case of 10th Planet hate.
I'd seen it happen to my Instructors the year prior but while at no level do I think it's acceptable, as white belts I didn't think anyone would care enough to single me or my team mates out.
Less than two weeks ago I along with my team mates at 10th Planet Melbourne competed at the Victorian Jiu-Jitsu Championships here in Australia.
All 5 of us we're all in the 79kg division and due to a registration mix-up a few of us we're matched up against each other and the organizers refused to switch the brackets.
Not the biggest thing we we're there to compete, but it did affect our overall team score.
After weighing in not during but after, I was informed that our 10th Planet rashies we're NOW illegal and we couldn't wear them.
Our rashies had been legal for white belts at this organizations previous events (with just a bit of fighting) and we had travelled 2 and half hours to compete at the event, so we couldn't organize anything else quickly.
They had a stand set-up selling comp approved rashies but we couldn't afford the better part of $100 bucks.
I politely explained our situation to the event organizer and asked if we could wear white t-shirts as we had two but was told No, I pointed out the two competitors currently competing nearby in white t-shirts but was still told No.
Later I would discover that white t-shirts are completely legal (just not for 10th Planet).
I told her that there are five of us almost half the division and what was she going to do scratch us she told me yes we'd already paid (I actually didn't realize 3 of the other guys had come prepared for the rashie fiasco or just bought new ones).
Luckily one of their refs pulled me aside after the organizer had walked off and said what she was doing was bullshit and we could borrow his white rashguard for me and my mate to share (we had to switch between fights).
Finally got onto the mat to warm-up and almost as soon as I start another ref walks over and tells me I cannot wear my competition approved knee pads.
I informed him I had a medical certificate stating that they we're required for me to compete and he retorted with 'I Don't care'.
I smiled politely the whole day and when discussing with refs and officials was nothing but diplomatic, but for the biggest jiu-jitsu event organisation to treat a white belt level competitor like that showed me that they couldn't care about jiu-jitsu because by me showing up is supporting them and their event while they flip the middle one at me because of the club I'm with, I was and am dumbfounded by it.
Frankly I put to much work in for that kind of treatment and it's hard enough to compete as it is without that crap.
Further more I run a group called GV Grapplers Association (look us up on facebook) dedicated to building our great sport in regional australia and get practitioners to compete at these type of events, but how hard am I likely to help their events now?
Luckily Matty Grubbs took home the gold in that division for 10th Planet choking out a 10th Planet hater with a Marcelotine in the semi's and landing one of the smoothest deepest N/S chokes I've ever seen in the final!
NOW THAT'S HOW 10 DO!
In the end I should thank those fuckholes, this whole thing has reinvigorated me and if anything I'm more 10th Planet than ever!!! (if that was possible)
