Brackish Waters Revisited!!! (Exclusive Technique Video!!)

So… New forum, new video. ;) I think most of the previous concerns came from the way I showed it and that this video will clear all that up for you!!!

Also, the was an audio problem that needed to be patched at one point and sounds a little rough. I may RE-RE-shoot it one day…. In the meantime, hopefully you get the picture. Sorry about that.

Important things to keep in minds about Brackish Waters:
1. LOTS OF WAYS TO ENTER: The Brackish Waters isn’t just an isolated move I do, I do it from EVERY shoulder trap. I showed it from the “mission pump” before because that’s literally “the first shoulder trap technique in the book”. The croc from mission control is the second one it the book which I’m showing now. I HAVE TONS OF COOL SHOULDER TRAP ENTRYS AND THAT’S NOT WHAT I WANT YOU TO WORRY ABOUT WHEN YOUR LEARNING THIS.
2. Clinching and controlling style of game/not a speed move: I think most of peoples concerns previously came from how it was show. I can do this slow. Real slow.
3. Does NOT require you to have a body type combination where you can latch a triangle: All body types in my gym are landing it on all other body types. Any game that requires that short of latch fails if the body types line up in a way so extreme that you can’t make it, even with the little tricks. THIS GAME STILL WORKS BECOUSE YOU NEVER HAVE TO LATCH A TRIANGLE FOR ANY OF IT. I will if I can, but you don’t have to.
4. When introducing this move to the class, before live rolling I do position specific live training from there (I’m a huge fan of doing this). I have them start rolling from a shoulder trap and its over if the other person can free a shoulder. Everyone quickly realizes the power of this position. I recommend you too, do this to get a feel for it. I’ve done this to every belt and every weight class, put yourself in there and give it a shot.
5. There’s TONS more: Yes, there is a complete game here and this is just the introduction. There are finishes every step of the way that you may start to find. Theres a double arm in triangle finish, ton’s of modified arm bars, am bars without clearing the head, reverse am bars, Americana style press the hand shoulder locks, inverted arm bars and much more. I recommend you start with what’s on the video and then branch out however it seems natural for you

Excellent video Brian. The constructive criticism worked, you came back with a tighter way more revised version.

One thing tho, there is no need to introduce yourself more than twice, once in the beginning and once when you sign off.

Other than that, that is one super solid hi tech rubber guard video, I am definitely gonna ad it to my personal game. You are seriously one of the best RG players on the planet and it's an honor to have you on the team fighting for us :)

I have some SUPER short legged guys in my class that kill with this now. Because this position allows for awesome control with just a feet cross, short legs or a super thick opponent are not an issue. This is the concern that most people had with the position from just watching me roll and compete in my weight class, before it was broken down. Because on guys in my weight class, I can pretty much always get the triangle so it looks like I’m playing a different type of game than I really am.

Awesome. This has changed my guard game completely. The locked shoulder position is no longer basic guard. It's now like a branch/path of rubber guard. Sick stuff!

This is sweet! definitely gonna start adding it to my game tomorrow.

Thanks for giving it at look! And yeah, a lot of the time I only spend a few seconds in each position; that's all the time you really need to spend. Its tons of control to go slower though if you wanted ;)

It's not 'brilliant' it is made by 'Ring 2 Cage', but you can put it on its knees and hold it in your guard and work rubber guard on it. I find it useful for teaching myself the movements of things. I've never in my life trained with anyone who has taught at or even trained in a 10th planet school and yet I have been tapping people with Invisible Collar and Dead Orchard, because I'm able to rep the movements :) So, although expensive I think it is worth it if you have the money (like a heavy bag - probably the least important part of boxing, way behind footwork, pad work and sparring, but useful nonetheless).

Thanks for the bump, hadn't seen this yet. Is the difference between brackish and muddy waters simply the arm being zombie'd?

He was showing us this today, and there's a subtle difference. He is trapping both shoulders inside. It's very, very powerful. Polished some stuff up for me. Really slick.

Just to make sure I got this right, Brackish waters is basically muddy waters with no hand to the mat, trapping opponents far shoulder with a high double bag (stated at 0:59, 1:31, 1:47).

Now the modified position, where you trap the near shoulder and far shoulder from the brackish waters with an angled triangle, is this considered a new position? If so what are you calling it? (1:44- 4:18), (3:30-4:11)

Ok, at this point I want to hold off naming a sub position in brackish waters but in answer to both your questions: The starting position of brackish waters can be thought of as either muddy waters without the arm trapped or the “locking the shoulder” position off the “toss” while grabbing your foot. WITHOUT THE OTHER STEPS, THAT’S POINTLESS THOUGH. Because you would just be stall, you’d have to just release it eventually and go for the toss. Brackish waters gives you the opportunity to LOCK THE OTHER SHOULDER AND PROCEDE DOWN THIS PATH WITHOUT EVER GIVING UP THE SUPERIOR COUTROL IT OFFERS.
The “angled triangle position” at the end is just one of the final steps of brackish waters to me, because YOU DON’T EVEN NEED THE TRIANGLE THERE, I DO IT WITH JUST MY FEET CROSSED ON BIGGER GUYS ALL THE TIME. The other should being in stops the posturing up.

I couldn't believe the difference in the position. Very subtle but super powerful. He's on to some of that Rickson level invisible Jiu Jitsu kinda stuff here.
