request for a coaching tip please

I'd appreciate any advice you can give me on this scenario.

Yesterday I rolled 2 5-minute rounds. I'm 148, he's about 175-180 and a current UFC fighter. He's a strong wrestler. I kept pulling half guard to lockdown, he'd get a strong head and arm control. I'd get a deep left side overhook, good right arm pimp arm on his hip or knee. I'd test a whip down to make space, he kept heavy, so I'd stomp or super stomp and get my left hook in.

This is where it would break down. I couldn't seem to get any result with the butterfly hook in. Eventually he would straighten his right leg up in the air, pass to side control where he was very strong, and americana me on the left side. He got me 4 times in 10 minutes in a groundhog day type experience.

Any tips on getting that butterfly hook to work? Was my right leg curling too hard against the butterfly in order to keep him from passing? Was I too flat on my back? Or was it simply a case of physics of the middleweight vs the lightweight?

It was a fun roll none the less, battling a kid in the top 1% of 1% in his profession. I'd like to be able to give him a better challenge next time and close up that hole in my game. Thanks.

Was he crushing it? If so work on getting space - elevate and kick away. If he lifts his leg then follow it - I think it was Eddie (maybe Marcelo) who said that when looking to butterfly sweep the key is always staying connected to the leg. If you create a little space then this should allow you to pull the other leg in too and then you can sit up with double butterflies. If not enough space, at least will give you some more leverage. You will not get the sweep if your opponent is crushing your leg tight, especially not if he has 30ibs on you...

If you were flat on your back then you are trying to lift a guy who weighs 180ibs with a single leg. So, unless you are getting on the leg curl machine and whacking it up to 180ibs you shouldn't be surprised you shouldn't sweep him. You need to create leverage and momentum... without a video though it is very difficult. What I do (if going for the sweep) in this position is keep my butterfly connected to his leg, but don't let him get too tight, if he does try and crush it I will look to kick away - the overhook makes this OK. All at one you want to pull the overhook down and lift the butterfly hook up - both in a circular motion like a steering wheel. Usually, though, I go for the full butterfly.

Do you have MTS? Eddie just uploaded an episode that made the warmups F start with Super Stomp to Cocoon... It would really help you to check them out.

I find my butterfly guard is one of the best guards to use on big guys but as Apperz said, you need to sit up to get the momentum for the sweep. Brent Smith changed my game completely with his butterfly techniques, get on that Project Cauliflower Ear!

If you can, watch the youtube video of Eddie vs. a joe moreira bb in a tournament. Eddie commentates on that match and at one point gets a butterfly sweep with the overhook...for another option. But, this is also a decent weight difference and this is what wrestlers can do. Also, if he does start to pass, try to get all the way on your side on that right shoulder and keep the left arm tight..and stay small. When that happens I generally will try to get under his left leg/knee and go for a single. But...I feel you, that's always a shitty spot.

Deny him the underhook. On heavy guys with skill one thing more important than securing the underhook is not giving him one. Look for perfect double unders after a whip up. Then dogfight or ec.

If he does win the underhook, make him fight for it, don't let him shoulder pressure you're face away from him. Bending your neck is gonna make everything weaker. If you made him battle for the underhook you should be on your side with both your shoulders perpendicular to the ground. Stomps way more effective here.

Being americana'd tells me you let your elbows float. Keep them tight to your ribs and build a frame. Tight elbows are yours, loose are his.

When I'm (135) using the stomp against Brandon (170ish) who loves passing the half guard with pressure, the key part is to USE the pimp arm and over hook and butterfly hook to get to your right side. Many times I will try this and even if I have all of the key parts of it, but I don't use them to get to my side, he will smash me flat and pass and then I'm in way over my head and I usually get arm triangled. You gotta use everything, but specifically the pimp arm, to move onto your side so that you can get your right leg involved somehow.

#geton your side. All the way. If your top shoulder is behind your bottom, even an inch , you're flat.

Are you getting both butterfly hooks in and going to cocoon? or just trying to sweep with one from flat on your back? You need to stomp and get the one in and use that single butterfly, pimp arm, and overhook to get to full butterfly/cocoon sitting up. Super tuff to butterfly sweep starting from flat on your back.

See if you can beat him in racket ball or tennis if the other suggestions don't help. :-)

He is talking one hook in (Lock down / Half Guard -> Super Stomp -> Single Butterfly Hook)

Ever since Bobby Rivers & Josh Passini have been on my ass about Whizzer, Pimp, Stomp, (3 comps ago) I've been getting after it, and I've been noticing the less flat you are even with my bunk ass flexibility, you can sneak it in. and extend the shit out of it to cocoon. Thanks for the insight Sam

Also, remember that there is a difference between YOUR overhook and HIS underhook. Just because it's there, does not mean you are using it. Whizzer his shoulder down after the whip down. Use that whizzer to keep him down and out of position. Drive that shoulder down and it will take his shoulder out of position, making it much harder for his underhook to function properly. Staying on your side will be much easier.

When he passes to side control, does he still have head and arm control? If so, check out Herzogs Ghost series.

Alot of great advice on this thread so far.

I would also add that you shouldn't give up on that whip down too soon. Keep working reps on that thing and watch your half guard game explode.

I would add that as soon as you have your butterfly hook in, start trying to use it to check his base right away. This will force him to open up a little, making your transition to full butterfly guard or possibly a meathook style game (my personal preference) way, way easier.

And make sure you don't avoid him. All that smashing and destruction is a tremendous blessing in your life.
