I started repping 10th Planet in 06/07 and over the years I've noticed the response gyms would give when you told them you were a Nibiru Warrior. We've all shared our descrimination stories here and this has always been a place for us to vent. It finally seems however, especially after Metamoris, that we are respected. Is anyone else here starting to feel the love? We may be the cousin nobody likes but are we finally a part of the jiu jitsu family?
Absolutely, not at all, and some are on the fence. It's the same it's always been. But I'd say the respect is definitely at the highests it's ever been. The denial is at it's highest. And those that are on the fence are a lot more open minded. 10th is having it's best year ever.
For example, the last school I trained at was Brazilian top team. One of their recently promoted black belts only had positive things to say about 10th planet. He was saying how in the end, it's all jiu jitsu and it's only going to help make everyone better. And the head no gi instructor was very agreeable with that point. And I've never felt any sort of odd tension for showing up in my Team Empire shirts. Just a warm welcome, lets roll, let's help each other get better. So yeah man. I think at this point, most places give 10th planet its props. Some are skeptical and just need to see more guys crushing it (which each year that number keeps growing), and some guys are always going to be in denial because they follow BJJ cults.
And yes, BJJ cult mentality is a real thing.
I think it's getting there. Although there will always be the diehard haters
true, it hasn`t changed for me neither. I haven`t seen a difference. I feel like if I get my rubberguard togeather without messing my knee up I can convince them. It is a bit harder when your a lighter weight though.

I feel like some people are def more open minded to it now, when I first started jitsu in 2010-2011 alot of people were confused why I wanted to learn the Truck Lockdown and RG so much (granted part of it being how bad I was and fresh out of the water didn't help either). But since even before MEtamorsis as I started to hit the Truck and EC more often people started to open their eyes (I'm one of the few Ronins around where I train, not many others play it as much). After Metamorsis one of my instructors joked about how I was a fan of EC before the PPV ha ha.
BUt yeah, I agree with the above there'll always be some haters, and that's part of what drives me at least sometimes.
The more badass competitors 10p has, the more the world will recognize. Not to mention the sheer number of 10p schools world wide, its hard to argue 10p isn't a force.

I think its gotten way better. Awarenes in general of 10p is at an altime high, and thats a great thing. And we are gonna keep going up from here! Jouban, Ben Saunders, boogie, and a bunch of guys comming up. Watch out for cristobal chavez and andy from El Paso!
I think there will always be haters, no matter what, And we will continue to grow and dominate just like we have been all along.
The aftermath of the most important rematch in Jiu Jitsu history :-). Definitely a big difference now.
Among the rank and file, I've had nothing except positive experiences.
On the other hand, from coaches, refs and organizers, I've seen outright disrespect and aggression.
I've been a Ronin since 2009, and the best thing I can say is that now, at least, everyone recognizes 10th Planet, whether they like us or not.
My two relevant experiences with this:
1 – My last tournament was at EGO Nashville. I was sitting on the bleachers and stretching a little, when a dude who was sitting on the floor behind the bleachers asked me, “Hey man, do you know Brandon Mccaghren?” (He saw my 10P shirt and drew deduced some connections). This started a short conversation, as this guy had crossed paths with B-Mac on occasion (all positive by the way) at seminars and such. Then he asked me what division I was competing in. When I told him, he patted me on the shoulder and said, “Whew…glad I don’t have to worry about rubber guard then since we’re in different divisions”. It was cool…just the knowledge that he might have to compete against 10P made him worry. Good stuff.
2 – The weekend after M3 I went to a local Gracie school for a Saturday morning open mat because some of our guys had fights that weekend and we weren’t going to be rolling that Saturday at our 10P gym.. I wore my gi (for like the 4th or 5th time ever), and we all rolled for a few hours. I electric chaired the shit out of several people…not to be a dick…but because they were all easy to catch it on. No one acted shitty about it, and nearly everyone said things like, “Yea man, gotta watch out for that Eddie Bravo shit…just ask Royler”. I even caught a go-go-plata, and dude was super cool. Don’t get me wrong, I got caught with some shit too (mostly gi chokes), but the point is everyone was really cool. The instructor, who I actually started jj with under a 30 day trial before I went to the 10P school I’m at now was also very positive. These guys could have easily been dickish about the whole thing, but they all acted cool and recognized 10P for what it is (in my opinion anyway). Good experience.

The beautiful thing about jiu jitsu is you can say whatever you want about another style, but rolling will prove what really works. A couple weeks back I was on the road and found a Gracie Barra in Florida and asked if I could drop in and roll, after telling them I was 10th Planet they were kind of skeptical. Then when it came time to roll I caught 2 blue belts and a purple in twisters. It wasn't even a skilled set up, I got to the truck and they reached for my head. One of the purple belts there said something like "Man, I have to study up on that twister shit". By the time we were done rolling I think they really respected the whole 10P game even though they still see it as unorthodox and everything. A lot of it just has to do with traditional guys not drilling and practicing stuff that their instructors don't believe in, they see back control as the best position for offense while we see the truck as our highest percentage position to finish from. One of the brown belts there actually had a pretty killer lockdown too. So I think a lot of techniques are slowly starting to spread :)
A guy from my gym on the fight team came up to me and said "that stuff doesn't work." He was dead serious faced. I was with a training partner who wanted to drill some truck techniques and I had my mastering the twister book with me while we were doing it. That's pretty much the extent of anything I'd consider negative from personal experience about 10P and the RG. Statements like that drive me to keep working hard at developing my game so that someday my jiu jits speaks for the 10P system and myself simply by being effective.

The gym I used to train at, The trainer there hates hard on 10th planet. I put guys of all sizes in gogoplatas omoplatas spiderweb lock down, EC and their response is that it only works for flexible guys and the best one.
"I wouldn't ever use that RG crap because I want to be able to walk when I'm older. It might be ok now but you will blow your knees. If it isn't natural movement then you shouldn't force your body to do it."
I showed him that angles in RG make it super easy and 'natural' and he just ignored it and repeated the warning. That was the trainer there. I just don't have time for that kind of negativity in my life. :D
One of my instructors screamed at me the other day during no-gi when I went for a calf-slicer from the truck against another blue belt. I had submitted him twice w/ the banana split from the truck and the third time around, I was going for it again but he defended it, basically handing the calf-slicer on a silver platter. A twister would've probably gotten me kicked outta class, to be honest. He was concerned about the safety of the students, but obviously it's not competition so if a dude wasn't tapping, I'd have just let it go. I tried explaining this to him but he doesn't even know the truck and couldn't understand where I was coming from. Regardless, I've been finding 10p techniques to be extremely effective but this one particular instructor has a hardcore IBJJF mentality and I got chewed out. To be fair, we have a very open-minded school and this instructor came up under a different lineage and transplanted to our city. The craziest part was that my training partner wanted to know how I did it. He didn't get hurt or mad, just curious. But I still think there's a ways to go and it's amazing that moves, and I mean literally, jiu jitsu moves can have politics behind it. Still gonna go for it though wherever I can.Quote:

I trained with coach herzog for almost five years before moving to Pittsburgh where I currently train at a Renzo Gracie school. I haven't experienced any type of discrimination when I roll with dudes who knows my home gym is 10th planet. The occassional making fun of the names of the techniques is the extent of anything and even that is in good, joking fun. I was training there when Eddie smashed royler at Metamoris and everybody at the gym gave Eddie and the system mad respect. There are several dudes at my gym who love 10pjj on the low and are always asking me when Eddie is doing a seminar in rochester. The black belt under daniel and renzo gracie is a cool dude and has never given me shit about using 10th planet techniques. But i heard that he is one of those hardcore IBBJF/gracie guys. But i believe that is out of respect for his coach because he always compliments me when I catch dudes with a 10th planet technique. Once I started training there i'd say within a week or two the instructors would do technique work against defending the lock down (they call it the scorpion lock) and other 10th planet technique which I thought was fun and proves to me that they know this stuffs is very effective. I'd say the majority of the dudes at my gym don't hate on 10th planet but definitely don't think it can keep up with their system...until we roll. I'm sure like a lot of other guys have experienced once you roll with someone who hates on 10pjj and you show them whats up minds are immediately changed. "Bro I almost tapped from your scorpion lock".
Yeah, things have changed so much in the last 5 or 6 years.
I remember in 2009, a known So-Cal BJJ blackbelt over on the UG was openly saying things like this:

This was a thread that Eddie and Louis Ho had both already posted in. So, he was basically saying this all right in the face of pure no-gi guys. So, it wasn't like they were off handed remarks that he never intended any no-gi guys to see.Quote:

But things have definitely changed. I don't think you would see many known American black belts saying these kinds of things so publicly and emphatically these days.

Gee its bit worrying I really hope it is getting better. New zealand has small bjj community and 10 planent is yet known widely. I was doing RD and my rolling aponent who was blue belt told me off to work on my guard. Good thing is I have yet hear any complaint from my instructor because I am only white belt and his was busy watching over higher help.
