Hey Guys,
So recently I have been ending up in Top Stoner Control a lot lately, however the Vaporizer is frowned upon by some of the instructors at my school. So I was just wondering what are some of your go to techniques from Top Stoner Control.
One option is to get some underhooks and move to mount.
Thank you for your reply, I have been doing something along those lines. I have been transferring out of stoner control, keeping the leg across.. and moving to mount.. Wasn't sure if there was anything else to be done within the position itself though, cause unfortunately the vaporizer is not really an option and if I am just going to transfer to mount, it doesn't really make much sense to stop in stoner control, if I am going to just transfer out of it. You know what I'm saying?
I do. My first school disallowed vaporizers and it sucked. My current school is much looser.
Because I'm a whitebelt I treat the vaporizer as catch and release. I will transition into it but not pull and watch what my opponent does. If he is paying attention he'll know he's caught and give you the tap. If he's fighting against the position, I let him go. So I really never put any pressure on the calf or the ankle. Zero chance anyone gets hurt. At that point anyone who has a problem with you doing it is probably not worried about injury, but is instead the kind of person who does not want to learn to defend things they don't currently know.
To me it brings up what is a more important question. My is my school not allowing a purple belt to use leg locks? What is their reasoning behind that? It's a question that would certainly cause me to consider other schools. Maybe it's still the best option for you, if so you're stuck but maybe there is another school with more progressive thinking about how the art is evolving.
I'm a newbie and I don't really know shit about top stoner, but I have to think there's a way to get to the back. Surly there is some way to get past his shoulder? Hopefully someone who knows wtf they are talking about will respond to this thread.
Exactly man, unfortunately out where I am almost NO schools are willing to accept the idea of leg locks, some of them even disallow catch and release (like some of the instructors where I train now), which its good you are allowed to at least do that.. If it even looks dangerous, you get bitched out for it.. Catch and release heel hooks, you get bitched at because the stigma of heel hooks is so bad.. that people are terrified at the mere though of them..
I don't know how familiar you are with getting to the truck, but if you transfer out of Top Stoner control, switch legs like you are going to mount, but hook the leg like you would from twister side, and roll to the truck you could take the back from there..
Well hell yeah. I'd be trying to get to the truck! Probably a whole mini-system for how to keep them controlled while you switch to hooking the other leg.
If you are training BJJ with self-defense as one of your reasons, not allowing you to learn some leg lock defense is, in my opinion, irresponsible.
I guess you have to move somewhere with a 10p school! :)
