awesome match
great match
He stayed low, never stood in Leo's guard and clinched his way thru top half for the pass. Marcelo is a master smasher, epic match :)
Did anyone else tear up a little at the end watching this match? It totally DID feel like a "passing of the torch" match Bobby.
just wow.
Just curious, why is it like a passing of the torch? Leo is definitely a little bit older than Marcelo, but they both competed a lot at the same time, and -77k is MARCELO's division. 2011 was the first year Leo went at -77k instead of -66k. So if anything, it was just Marcelo doing what he was expected to do...maintain his dominance and become the only person to get 4 Golds at ADCC in one weight class.
You know what felt like a changing of the guard? Rafa Mendes submitting Cobrinha at the Pans. Cobrinha hasn't been finished at his own weight in probably a decade, and after ten matches with Rafa, all of them close, Rafa finally comes and takes Cobrinha's arm? That's a passing of the torch.
Marcelo and Leo have never fought in the same division before, gi or no-gi, and this was their first match. Marcelo is also way more accomplished, medals-wise, than Leo. Leo has one World title at black belt and Marcelo has 5. Leo won ADCC twice and Marcelo won 4 times, with a bronze and silver in the Absolute as well. It was an awesome match, but usually "the torch passes" when someone of higher standing passes it on to the next guy. Marcelo's OG status, with 10 years in the game strong competing at the highest levels.
If there was a time the torch passed with Marcelo, it was in 2007 at that ADCC. He got Gold at 77k and Silver in the Absolute, winning every match by submission until he lost his 8th and final match to Drysdale. That's the same year he debuted the guillotine, north south choke, spiral armbar, 1 leg X, and crucifix. That's when he truly transcended everyone else.
Do you think Leo will compete in adcc again?
Epic and masterfully basic!
Anyone in IL have the DVD set? I woul like to see these matches in better quality.
just his patience impresses me. I need to emulate some of that. Chill a little more instead of trying to force something to happen.
Ummm, maybe so. When they hugged after the match Leo said something like "these young guys wore me out this year." Leo really only does ADCC as far as tourneys go, and it's been that way for a while now.
So at first guess Id say maybe no. But then again Leo told Kid Peligro that he actually felt pretty comfortable not having to cut weight, and that he was surprised at how natural it felt for him at 77k. Leo is still one of the best at takedowns, passing, and guillotines in any regard. He took Claudio Calasans' back, and Claudio is a solid pick as arguably the top guy at Medio or 77k besides Marcelo. Leo is older, but took out Enrico Cocco, JT Torres, and Claudio Calasans. That's amazing. I think he has the wind in his sails to compete again in 2013. But if he does again at 77k, which would be likely, Claudio Calasans, Victor Estima, Kron Gracie, and Murilo Santana are all going to be toss ups for Finalists. And Davi Ramos...Davi Ramos could absolutely give anyone, including Marcelo Garcia a run for their money in ADCC rules. That guy is basically a slightly less scary, more versatile version of Palharres/Toquinho.
That said I think Marcelo no-gi is still going to take the 2013 ADCC crown, but after that I see him slowing down, with age, injuries, and the most stacked division starting to catch up. I would love to be wrong on that though. I also think he'll win the Worlds this year again, but that's not as safe a bet as 2013 ADCC.
Maybe it was the wrong choice of words for a fan as distinquished as yourself. What I saw was one person on top of the mountain beat a man who has been there. And he was comfortable with it. Call it whatever.
Please post any pivotal matches. We love that shit.
I'm not distinguished. I was just surprised at the choice of words, considering Marcelo and Leo both won their first ADCC the same year (2003.) They both were "on top of the mountain" at the same time. I realize it probably sounded dickish, but I genuinely didn't mean it to come off like that.
Here are some good matches from Marcelo when he really came into god mode in 2007. These are his four 77k matches.

Unfortunately his 4 Absolute matches from 07 aren't online, but he north-south choked Mario Miranda, armpit armlocked Rolles Gracie from butterfly, RNC'd Cacareco, and then fought Robert Drysdale for the Absolute Gold.

Good thread.
Good thread Bobby. Mike knows his shit.
No problem. Once again I really wasn't trying to come off as an asshole buddy. It looks smart ass reading it now.
Man even though Marcelo got Silver at ADCC 09, I really wish I could put those matches up. Budovideos would yank em down ASAP though. That's where he hit 3 mounted guillotines on a row, with one on Kron Gracie after almost 15 minutes. Pablo Popovitch won in the finals, but it was really controversial because he kept grabbing Marcelo's shorts and rashguard. He passed Marcelo's guard at the last seconds of the match, and Marcelo recovered guard after about 5 seconds so it was too late. That was the last year he did the Absolute too.
I imagine most people here saw his 2011 matches. Amazing. 3 out of 4 matches won by sub at ADCC and no points scored on him at Worlds or ADCC. Best ever man. I'd love o see a superfight with Marcelo and Rafa Mendes at a catchweight or something before Marcelo gets too much older. I doubt itll happen.
I'll throw up some old vids of Marcelo training back when he was developing his guillotines ns chokes and crucifixes.

Wow those are fun to watch...
