I dont train at a 10P gym but I like lockdown. I mostly try to go to Leite style attack rather than say the electric chair. Anyway my question is more defensive. Its very hard to get the jaws of life to work on a very strong opponent. So I was looking at the whip down. My question is, why not just use the whip down and nix jaws of life?
Depending on the opponent and his body composition, a whip down alone may not be enough to get underhooks. I would use both to break their hold on you and get the underhooks.
Nobody can squeeze you 100 % for long. Once you feel a opening, then hit Jaws.
If your whip up/whip down into reverse lockdown is legit, you definitely can. I rarely need jaws of life when they have a solid top side head & arm. You can trap the arm with the overhook and threaten a sweep with the whip down. They either get swept or they base, and you have the underhook.
Also develop your overhook game. Forcing anything is usually the wrong play. Look at Jiu Jitsu as water flowing down hill taking the path of least resistance. Someone giving a 10P guy a hand on the mat should mean certain death. Work on hitting your Stomp game, Meat Hook, Flying Kung Fu etc from there. Just like Electric Chairs are way more deadly when your Dog Fight is on point being able to take over or underhook paths is crucial to going to the next level
All great answers. It’s great to have both a strong JOL and whip down. But sometimes you don’t want to use either, just take that overhook and work to fire and flip
