Keep practicing, and pay special attention to your base whenevr you are in the sort of positions where kimura setups are likely
I learned the kimura in my first month of grappling, but it wasnt until my base improved and I stopped giving them the guard back cheaply that I started to go for them on top. Once they were all about defending the neck from guillotines, darces etc the kimura just pops right up.
My tip besides keep going for it, is not to solely focus on going for it either. I feel its something that pops up quite often when they are aware of chokes and armlocks and are more likely to give up the kimura grip when their escapes become mosre hasty
Sometimes it can be where you reach for it that will make the space for it or not. If you reach for the grip and your second arm goes under their arm closer to their elbow than their shoulder, it will be much easier as you need half the space to create the second grip. Hope this helps :)
One interesting tip that was shared with us at the gym a few weeks ago by Darren Currie ... Was to try and grab a hold of the outer part of the hand, instead of the wrist .. So when you reach over, you go for the hand. This allows you a much stronger control with just one arm, with that you can adjust the hips and grab a proper grip with the other arm. I'd say it is analogous to grabbing the foot/toes during old school sweep. You don't want to grab the ankle as it will make sprawling much easier for your partner. Play around with it.
