Popovitch: Gi is boring, I don't like it, No-gi is a better Sport

    Wow!

    Pablo Popovitch says:

    1) gi is boring,
    2) he doesn't like it,
    3) it's a big transition for gi guys to go to no-gi (and vice versa),
    4) gi and no-gi are completely different,
    5) no-gi is a better sport, and
    4) he loves no-gi, so he's just going to stay there.

Times are changing when such a high level gi guy of Brazilian origin would openly say this.

So I train 80% in the gi... only 1 day a week no gi. I know that both help each other... I feel like the gi has helped movement in open guard situations. Nogi also helps positional control. Its interesting how people say no gi is "faster"... to me its way more relaxed because you can't rage by holding crazy lapel/sleeve grips and just go nuts. You have to think about natural grips/leverage points and to me that slows it down and makes it more fluid. Nogi is more flowing to me, which I really really like.

I think he meant for himself and competing. In terms of teaching, his school offers 9 gi classes a week to only 3 no-gi. Is this true, Ericp?
