Did you train BJJ prior to 10P?
all the respect for your efforts just! One thing you may want to consider is the difference btw free rolling and competition. If you wanna play off your back just pull full/half guard. This is common for alot of guys who start, especially those with the flexibility and natural leg dexterity that you exhibit. However, I once was criticized for playing lazy mans jiu jitsu, which is when you don't really initiate positioning, and in competitions where there's points, stalls, and stale mates, you wanna be more emphatic about initiating your game. You really do have natural abilities in your legs but you can't just lay flat on your back like that. You gotta move your hips out so that you give yourself an angle to gain leverage or a window to get to where you wanna be. I was surprised that you didn't try some rubber guard, or an arm triangle when the guy was stacking your high guard cause you definitely can pull double bag. You had lockdown in the first match and chances for double unders but I think maybe you weren't focussing on what you had and more on defending. Even with strong lockdowns, you still gotta move you hips and legs to get sweeps, whip up/down, or at least back to dog fight.
but you have a great attitude and alot of potential. Just don't sacrifice position so easily to play off your back, initiate! Just as you wouldn't let the first guy get comfortable with grips, you can't just give up position without having a plan. that's a free roller's mentality which isn't wrong, just not strategically strong when in competition. the guy helping you was giving good instruction, with your flexibility if you wouldve pushed off a bit on his chest or hips, you definitely could've opened a window to retain guard in the second match. But keep working man, cause you truly do have some natural talents in those legs.
ps i believe you had some sub attempts from bottom in both matches with your leg trapped in the middle. It's really difficult to do this, so consider a meat hook in those situations, or pulling your leg out rather than forcing the submission and losing position.
Cool Justin. I will check these vids out when I get a chance. (Blocked at work)
Your game is very reminiscent of mine when I first started grappling which is why I had so much input in how you maybe able to improve. I'm not much of a competition grappler myself, but I can empathize with your strengths and areas of improvement and I'd just thought I'd share my thoughts with you.
I think it was a great and constructive post La'a.
Kadek is gonna be a badass, think bout this, he only gets to train with us about once a week.
