I get more leverage with the opposite arm. When you attack the same arm, like above. Ive found that if your opponent weighs more than you, he can drop all his weight onto the elbow your attacking and stall. He won't be going anywhere, but neither will you.
Renato taught a similar technique at a seminar at Victoria into the triangle choke. I have had great success shutting down several guys guard passing game using this underhook.
I dont usually try this. Ive found much more success with getting both legs to the strong side and breaking the grip. Caio terra shows the exact counter im talking about in his rolled up episode.
Kicking the leg around the arm is crucial. Dont hesitate. Otherwise it's very easy to pass the guard on the side where the arm is not underhooked.
I like this counter a lot! super effective for me. The key for me is timing that underhook (the sooner the better). If you try it to late the percentage of getting it goes down, (at least for me anyway).
