Question for Arun Sharma
First of all, please take no disrespect in my question. After reading the news story here http://news.yahoo.com/swiss-tourist-...130031713.html
, I thought what is happening, is this just the media blowing things out of proportion, or is this some other issue? I then realized that you post on here and I thought I would ask for your input so I had a more informed picture.
Thank you in advance if you can take the time to enlighten me. I figured you would have more insight into the matter as you work in law enforcement.

If it is anything like the last time I am sure Arun will be super busy for the next few days. :(
Will let him know about this thread on fb. :)

I don't think Arun will find you askng him about this disrespectful. He is closer to the area than anyone else, and he was pretty actively involved, trying to be helpful after that last case too.
-
Im sure Arun will be very pleased to answer. He is a great guy and is very knowledgeable. He has been teaching tons of Free Self Defense and rape prevention seminars to women across India since the first incident mentioned in the article.

Hi Ern,
Sure brother i am glad you asked about this...
First of all i am feeling ashamed to be a part of such a society out here where thr has been so many Crime cases against females & sexual violence in India.. in last 2 months, first the tragic incident of Damini Rape, thn some kidnapping and sucide cases. Eve teasing cases, and some other rape cases too which never got the attention of media. Two more rape cases again.
The First Rape Case - Swiss Women Raped in Madhay Pradesh.
The second gangrape was reported from Indore where a woman travelling from Dewas was raped by the driver, conductor and one one more person. The victim was travelling to Indore to meet her husband. Police have seized the bus and arrested the three accused.
Damini Case : One of the five men charged in the December attack hanged himself in his jail cell Monday.
Check this : The minimun age for a consent sex is 16 now, but min. age for watching porn is 18.
You can just imagine how dumbass the system is out here, and authorities are increasing the vote banks using this rape case.
Taking about SEX is still treated as a taboo in some places here, Couples spending some time in public areas are seen as rule breakers and not following the Indian Culture, Dowry cases all over, Protest against Inter Cast marriage.
"India's creaky legal system and a social system that frequently treats women as second-class citizens. A United Nations report released last week ranks India 132 among 187 nations in gender equality, behind rival and neighbor Pakistan."
Law system is weak, Police is slow n almost in sleeping state, people are less aware of there own personal protection, education level is low in some areas, where you find more people will criminal mentality.
Overall its been a mess, i hope our Govt. takes appropriate action n steps towards a safe society, where our female frnds and family members can walk without fear. People are protesting against it from months now..
Its sad that people now not even willing to step out and ensure there protection by learning some skills and spreading the awareness, thy dnt want to spend 2 USD for trng as thy think better to have a burger thn spending it on training. In my recent free workshops we trained around 5000 girls, and developed that overall street awareness and survival skills, and most of all boosted the confidence so thy can step out for other females who are going through all these crimes.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Is there a possibility that this type of behavior is in some way the typical copycat crimes that occur in the U.S.? The Media sensationalizes a case thereby creating opportunities for those who want the same exposure? From your comments it appears that some of this may be a phenomonea created by old cultural/traditional norms not being enforced through the traditional tribal methods leaving law enforcement to fill in the gap. Or is this just the turbulance of tradition meeting change? I previously read this article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-18280997 which was little eye opening regarding the caste system. It may be that this is a european look at some other culture, I don't know.
This happens a lot in rural areas in america..the local population used to enforce their own code of conduct but the cultural norms/folkways have broken down over time and now only the law enforcement agencies keep the peace. I try to keep an open mind, but it is hard to keep your own beliefs/norms/cultural influences from clouding your judgement. Once again, thank you for your time.
