No its not a bad joke. He died of liver failure. He had be battling complication from the spider bite for over a year. I saw him come out for the encore at the Big 4 in 2011, he was rehabbing from the bite at the time. Also years of heavy drinking.
So go dust off the axe and play/listen to some Slayer or "South of Heaven", "War Ensemble", "Raining Blood", "Angel of Death", "Mandatory Suicide", and "Seasons in the Abyss"

It's a drag. I have seen them live a number of times. What a loss to the metal scene.
A sad day, I have been a Slayer fan since the 80's. saw them play many time and it will not be the same without him. RIP Jeff you will be missed.

I saw slayer, possessed, and dark angel at radio city in a Anaheim in 1984 or 85. Man, how time flies, slayer leads ruled, RIP.
Possessed, wow. Their logo was my first tattoo when I was 15. It's covered now, but I had the Seven Churches logo without the upside down cross.
