self taught - ronin beginner question

For the first time ever, As I went to mission, dude reached up and grabbed my foot (that was behind the head across the back) and pulled down. Shocked me, as I haven't had this happen before, didn't hurt too much, but it did put a lot of stress on my bad knee.

So:
1) what did I do wrong
2) how do I stop this
3) after a self review, I figured I could go to jui claw/omaplata to alleviate the pressure, but not sure if this is the correct pathway.

Other information:
I kinda figured I might have been a little slow and sloppy in my movement - so advantage anyone for my laziness. I asked him later, and he said he used to roll in eastern PA and the guys at the gym would do that to him when he tried pulling some rubber guard. He says it is his immediate go to move as soon as someone tries to pull rubber guard. He told me that he has tried the system before and has liked some of it, but he doesn't train it.

any help would be appreciated. I do need to go to a moon sometime and learn the basics under instruction. I have a feeling I have developed bad habits.

I'm assuming it wasn't the hand your would be trying to zombie from mission control but the other one (his left hand pulling down your left foot, or right hand/ right foot), correct? I like setting up triangles from there. If you are flexible enough, you should be able to shoot your free leg inside of his arm and start working for a triangle or a tepee. I very much doubt he will continue to hold on to your toes once he is in triangle country.

Or if you are in new york when he tries it, you may be able to go to meat hook to the stocks. Get on your non-meat hook hip as much as you can to help with this transition.

Hope these help, and you can never go wrong getting to a moon as soon as you are able to. I'd highly recommend it.

Yup. Stocks and triangle. He's doing you a favor separating his elbow from his core.

Free triangle. Switch to meat hook, grab his wrist and triangle. Kick his hand off and triangle. Lots of options but triangle comes to mind immediately.

This. People think its a great rubber guard defense until you put them in the stock

this happens a lot and has come up a few time on the forum as well. As well as the advice already given you should always tense your foot so that you are pulling your toes back towards your knee. This not only helps to stop them getting the foot, it also means when they go for it they expose themselves even more to the counters already suggested.
As a plus it also stabilizes the knee joint great for those of us with dodgy Knees. Props to Sean Bollinger for showing me this

Agreed.

You can apply an ounce of prevention as well. I've noticed that when a number of guys are in mission control, the foot is loose and floppy. Not only does that make it easier to grab, but leaves your knee vulnerable to stress. Generally speaking, its a good idea to be pointing your toes up just like would with a triangle. This engages the anterior tibialis muscle which engages the patellar tendon -- which stabilizes the knee (BUT rubber guard is bad for your knees! Not if you play it right...).

You obviously need to relax and let your foot go loose in order to kung fu move to jiu claw, but when you're holding MC or NY, keep your toes curled back and pointed toward the ceiling.

Thank you all for the information. I have been lazy with the foot and not tensing it as described. I look forward to my next roll with this guy :) He taught me something, you all taught me something else, now I am hoping to teach him something. Thanks.
