That rule is most likely there for the same reason I always make sure I'm wearing clean underwear when I'm rolling in the gi. When the pants' waistband is used as a grip, your underwear is very likely to see the light of day. If a women is wearing a thong, it may be deemed inappropriate in a tournament setting. Kind of ironic that the same culture invented the brazilian wax ;)

It doesn't seem like it. I always wear leggings under my shorts for no gi and spandex shorts under my gi pants in the gi. IBJJF would require me to wear brief underwear under those which would be very uncomfortable. I found it to be a silly rule too!Quote:
