Royce Gracie's postive steriod test

Would never want to disrespect what the Gracie's have done for the sport, and it's not my place to judge Royce Gracie as an individual; I couldn't image the pressure he would be facing against Sakuraba. But just looking at it in the abstract, its kinda crazy that Royce Gracie, the guy who taught the world that superior technique can defeat the superior athlete tested positive for steroids. If you think about UFC 1, besides Ken Shamrock, Royce might have been the most athletic guy in the field. Even if he wasn't, in a grappling situation (where guys didn't have a clue to defend the takedown), I would bet Royce Gracie enjoyed a significant strength advantage. When someone who grapples everyday with a number of black belt relatives rolls with a guy who does kata's for a living, he's gonna be able to rag doll his opponent.

But seriously, this sucks. What a way to tarnish a legacy. He still did great things though.

yeah it was awhile ago, but sometimes I get busy with life and I"m a couple of years behind....I heard that guy from Fearfactor has a podcast now :)

just making sure. i'd say if he's on steroids now, let the man do what he wants. no more competition, so he wants to bump that quality of life a bit.

I guess age was probably a big factor, a considerable amount of time had passed since the early UFC days....also Sakuraba had incredible technique

Although I wouldn't approve of it, I could at least understand why someone would cheat if they were broke and really needed the money. But this is a guy who has money and can easily continue to make money outside of the cage. Royce took steroids just for his own ego.

I have no issues with people who want to take 'roids for the purposes of personal goals, but for competition purposes it is obviously unfair.
