It's been awhile, but I remember reading Judo Gene Lebell's book. He talked about how the Judo association took Judo from legit martial art to obscure sport, and how the association black listed him because of his incorporation of catch wrestling techniques (probably among other things from what I've heard about Gene :) ). I think its natural to defer to an association, in the U.S. the prestige of an association is synonymous with high achievement (i.e. the NBA and NFL), but I think there should be more caution in the martial arts. I am certainly not trying to take the wind out of anyone's sail who has an ibjj tournament coming up, i'm still really proud of my 3rd place medal at pan ams (as a white belt :)) but I think an honest discussion is a healthy thing. From the letter I posted, it seems like things are far from a healthy discussion and more of a one way street.
I won't compete in ibjjf competition. It's just too much to me and a lot in order to get certified through ibjjf etc. it just isn't worth it to me. They do run a good tournament though.
The IJF has ruined Judo and continues to ruin it and even more sad the IOC is endorsing and supporting their changes. I gave up on the idea of returning to Judo when they outlawed grabbing the legs. They are limiting the art and Judo is a beautiful sport and martial art before the IJF took control. Gene Lebell was completely correct in trying to grow the art and it sucks that is the hand he was delt.
True.....
BJJ has become a traditional martial art...
