BJJ Instructor Openly Sells Belt Promotions In California

I was reading the undergroung BJJ forum today and one thread caught my attention: It was about a certain person that had recently been promoted to black belt under professor Aloisio Silva in California. It appears that Prof Silva openly advertises ‘Non Member testing’ Which means that non members of his schools can come in and book an evaluation with him and after just a 1 hour ‘evaluation’ he would promote them in the belt that he deems is fair.

Aloisio Silva is well knowed in the BJJ community and has produced some very good BJJ players such Leka Vieira or Joe Camacho for example so this comes as a surprise that he so openly advertises this…

This is usually a taboo subject in BJJ as most instructors require a long term relationship to be established before any kind of belt promotion can be mentioned. You can’t really fairly evaluate someone’s rank in just one hour. This just goes to confirm what many of us have heard: that everything has a price and that nowadays many people can just buy a BJJ belt.



On Aloisio Silva’s website:

Non-Members requesting to be assessed by Aloisio Silva BJJ must request a private class of one hour to have a certified instructor assess technical knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and determine belt rank in accordance with out Belt Rank Promotion Technique Requirement. Belt Rank Requirements are available upon request.

Aloisio is a super nice guy but obviously has some issues... And I don't think Aloisios is running the gym and site also as far as I know it's all

I recently saw a promotion video of a newly minted black belt via Fabio Vinelli via Aloisio Silva. The new black belt acknowledges in the speech he gives upon receiving his promotion that he doesn't know most of the people in the class. That sounds like further evidence that accusations are true.

Of course, it's not the diploma or the belt that will save your ass in a fight - it's the knowledge. However, the guy I'm talking about owns a gym, so he may feel he needs the rank for business purposes.

Kind of like the Gracie University schtick. Just even less legitimate.
