When to start student mma competition

I'm not an MMA instructor, but I help sign up the new guys at the gym. I always tell them 6-8 months if they really grasp everything and meet all the needed requirements from the MMA and JJ coach, but a year is better if they can wait. And that's usually about right. We have requirements on training hours per week and other things. If you want to be legit and you want your guys to win, you have to lay down standards. If they don't meet those standards, they don't fight. I think every gym goes through the phase where they let their guys fight too soon, then you learn and start to go about it a little differently.
