Top Half underhook
Can someone point me to the MTS where Eddie talks about needing the underhook on the same side as the lockdown when you're in top half? Someone in my gym was telling me that it should be the other way around – that you should have the underhook on the side of your free leg and a neck hug on the side of the trapped leg. I want to find the video, so I can explain why Eddie's way is better.

ive never seen it done where you would need to have an underhook on the the free leg arm. Ive seen double underhooks and such but only having an underhook on the free leg side would give you zero protection from getting your back taken. As a general rule, you want an underhook on the same side arm as the leg they have trapped. If you dont have an underhook you should at the very least have a whizzer to stop you from getting your back taken.
If your looking for the basic no hands pass you want an underhook on the same side arm as the lockdown is on...connected with a gable grip around your opponents neck and turning their face towards the lockdown (heavy shoulder pressure). Let your friend do it his way so you can take his back all day...lol.

The only time you would not want the underhook on the trapped leg side is if you have confidence in your whizzer and your base and you want the D'arce/Jnecktie/Arm in, or they beat you to it and you have to throw your whizzer in. If you want to control and pass you, want the underhook to stop them going to your back and to keep them flat. Vj has it right, shoulder pressure with the free side underhook with the trapped.

Nearside underhook is how BJ passes and pretty much how all passes straight to mount are started.

That's is essentially the dominator pass aka double underhook half guard pass that Joslin is showing. Except one of the underhooks is executed with your head. I never do that but it looks mad legit. Anytime I put my head on the mat like that I'm hunting for the chopping block with my left arm hooking his head, not his arm.
BJ's passes at the beginning of that highlight reel I do often, I always thought it was called the dummy pass or dope mount, he wasn't passing from top half lockdown :)

I really love that pass. Man... bj makes everything look so easy. Damn I wish I was that good. Wow.

I completely glazed over the top lockdown part lol. Yeah I don't think a nearside underhook is ideal for passing there.
I know it as dope mount too

All right. Thanks everyone. Just to be clear, though, how do I take the back from there. Is it similar to prison guard where you shrug the arm off your head using a gable grip on the other side?
