double c-cup vs the underhook for side control escapes

Hi guys I was hoping to discuss the rationale for using the double c-cup side control escapes vs the traditional side control escape where you get an underhook and hip out. For me, the double c-cup is 1000 times more effective for escaping traditional or judo side control (if they turn to twister side control, then obviously the Heisman becomes the right move). That alone was enough to convince me to switch from the traditional underhook escapes to the double . But, are there other reasons why we should be using the double c-cup? My theory is besides being more effective, the double c-cup is better for avoiding strikes and does not put you in jeopardy of the d'arce choke.

Here is an example of what I would call the "traditional underhook side control escape." Not putting him on blast, obviously there is a time and place for everything, and I was a big time user of this kind of escape until I learned the double c-cup.

Yeah. The traditional underhook escape from side is flawed. Too many counters have evolved and developed over the years to combat that underhook. The C-cup (or shallow underhook) is much safer and more effective. Most highly evolved grapplers are not using The traditional underhook because of this.

No offense to the guy in the video, but those escapes are all against a very underdeveloped side control.. If he isn't making mistakes like shifting up to his head when he doesn't have an underhook (or whizzer or any underhook substitutes). Then you can probably just do any escape you wanted, or even just "slip out". Also why would someone finish that knee slice without an underhook? Refer to warmups D1 on the fundamentals of this passing... ;).

Good topic Viv. The shallow underhook has become a staple control in modern nogi. It has filled a void where there needed to be an piece of control where the underhook was not available yet because of certain details or reasons, but the other controls (whizzer, wrist control, etc.) were inferior and most likely a "mistake" to attempt. I love the shallow underhook!

I loved the video Eddie put on MTS a few episodes ago where he talked about those escapes. The Hiesman is awesome! I would like for people to discuss incorporating traditional hip bumps to the "leaning on the door" shrimps discussed in the video...

Pretty soon it's gonna be super hard to hold us in dominant positions with all the defensive reps we are getting in!
