Has anyone gone to an Extreme Grappling Open event? What did you think and how well was it attended?
I've been wondering the same thing. The women who organizes it will be competing at the IBJJF no gi Chicago open next weekend so I was going to ask her about it.
I typically look at past results for a tournament to see turnout but they don't have results from any of their events last year on the website. I'll post after the 30th what I find out but I am interested in what others do have to say about EGO.
I always compete at the EGO! I'll be at the one in Indy on April 26th! James and AJ Clingerman are the folks that run it and they are good people. Unfortunately the EGO tends to be slightly disorganized and if you're planning on doing more than one division you had better plan on being there all day. The matches are always fun and competitive though and there is usually a really good amount of people there. It's single elimination so its possible to go one and done but if you win you'll have plenty of matches. At the last Indy EGO in October of 2013 there were 4 people including myself in the blue belt gi division at super featherweight (less than 144.9lbs) which was unusually low, the EGO before that there was probably 7-8 in that division, that same day I had 8 people including myself in the intermediate nogi division. I had 5 matches overall that day split between the 2 divisions.
The rule set there is actually pretty decent. They follow a lot of the IBJJF rules regarding points, heel hooks, spinal locks, and knee bars but they allow knee reaping, little toe side toe holds, bicep & calf slicers in the majority of the divisions. All in all it's a pretty fun tournament that always has a good turnout with lots of very skilled competitors. Hope to see you all there!
Thanks Logan! Their website didn't give much information. It's always good to hear from someone that has gone. I will probably miss the one in IN but plan on hitting Nashville.
Logan was right on the money, tights and all, LOL. It's a very competitive tourney. Amber, there were quite a few females at the last event but i'm not sure what the weight class was. if you compete in gi and no gi, you will be occupied the entire day. a lot of good competition though. i hope you guys can make it. i'm going to NAGA Chicago the week afterward so I'll see you guys either way!!
Thanks for the info Jay. Naga Chicago is the same weekend as both US grappling and the training camp. I know a lot of guys are going to the camp but I can't get off work so I'm doing US Grappling because it is going to be submission only, no time limit. They also have absolute divisions which means more matches. It's a great tournament :-)
