3-1 Last weekend WB Sub Only Tournament (Absolute)

Hey all, last weekend I decided to take a really big risk and test my busted ribs in action. I was off for 6 weeks due to injury and this is my first comp since being out for 1.5 months straight. I trained for ONLY 2 weeks before this event and needless to say YOU CAN TELL my conditioning SUCKS! The tournament was absolute style and I was put into the primarily White/some Blue division. I did go 3-1 on the night and took home the bronze medal. I absolutely should have taken gold but I gassed and gave up a choke that I shouldn't have. To be honest I didnt show what my full heart was made of, and it was a terrible decision in hindsight. I could have won the tourney if I had just conserved energy better and did the small things, IMO. Learning experience.

Here is the disclaimer:

• I had 2 weeks of training after 6 weeks off (i gained 12 lbs on T-bell and other junk food taking a much needed full break)
• I am usually quite bit more active and my conditioning is usually way better!
• I was "turtling up" a lot instead of trying to regain guard because there was pressure on my ribs often and I was confident in my back defense.
• The things that I did do I felt good. There were no submission attempts that were close in the entire event.

My first match wasn't super exciting. He kept trying to stay active but wasn't really doing much with it. Won via RNC

My second match was against the biggest guy in our division. I felt in control of the match from the first second until I gave up the choke like an easy prom date... You can see the look of frustration on my face when i didnt land the marcellotine. And I was exhausted. But I did hit the electric chair, showing some of that 10p love! You could hear a lot of people were impressed with the sweep in the audio (hard to hear), as I was the ONLY person repping 10p at the event, most of them don't get to enjoy our style too often.

This match was BRUTAL!!!
My god, i spent a good 5-7 minutes defending the arm triangle seriously unable to move because he was very top heavy on me and strong, but his attack from there sucked!! I was waiting for him to bail the whole time, but he just kept at it. And when you get good at defending a Blue/Purple belts arm triangles, these just seem weak as hell. My 155lb hotbox coach has a 10x better arm triangle than this 200lb gorilla of a guy. It was frustrating, and I tried for a second to show him how the F*CK we do arm triangles at 10p but then I decided to stick to my game and not fall into a game of Ego.. Felt great to hit the Baseball choke anyways, looked for it on all the fights that day.

My third place match was pretty easy going. Anytime I deal with a smaller opponent I already have them mentally beat in my mind, and it helps me relax instead of dealing with gorillas all day and worrying about being stuck under that mass of weight. This match I was just trying to have some fun instead of flying in for a finish. It was a nice opportunity to play and not get too competitive, and it fits my style better. One thing that it really helped me develop for the first time is hitting the "zombie" while going for a triangle. If you look closely you can see my opponent defends the triangle by trying to force the second hand back in through the gap. I took what path I knew from RG and tried to apply it for the finish. It actually completely removed the arm and helped me sink in for the finish! New toy learned.
