Good afternoon,

So, I am continuing to diligently study the lockdown. Musashi says "You must study this deeply." I'm pretty sure he was talking about lockdown.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how to whip up when somebody has an arm around my head. To do that, I'm trolling through videos to try to remember which one has 'that one thing I saw Eddie do that one time that involves shrugging the arm off the head.' Never did find it actually.

But what I did find is this:

MTS 47 (~26:00): Whip Back – to Whip Up – to Perfect Double Underhooks, discussing crappy double underhooks smash mode. When Eddie's executes the Whip Back, he's releasing the lockdown. During the drills, nobody else is doing this. Also, the Whip Up doesn't look like the Whip Up I see on youtube or Mastering the Rubber Guard where you push up on the ribs or shoulders, that doesn't seem to be required. Seems like that's some old school stuff.

MTS 47 @71:38: Black Mamba to Quarter Guard to Plan B to Lockdown to Dogfight. Eddie doesn't mention plan B but he talks about a crappy Half Plex. I soak that in and go look at the Half Plex.

MTS 24 @ 5:37: Half plex. Eddie shows us some cool stuff. I think "dude, that looks like Plan B." I look it up in my old school Mastering the Rubber Guard and sure enough, it looks like the same thing.

Can someone correct my thinking here?

* Plan B or Twist Back Plan B combo is the Half Plex. Same thing. New Terminology.
* Both the Half Plex and the old Twist Back Plan B combo involve bending the leg back at that weird angle (as does the Godfather!)
* The Whip Back relies on this too!
* It looks like this basic movement will force your opponent to base out, forcing him to abandon his whizzer in Smash Mode, forcing him to fight the sweep from quarter guard...possibly forcing him to abandon his control over my head which stops both my old school Whip Up and my old school crappy electric chair.
* Dude, it looks like the game changed a lot from the youtube videos and Mastering the Rubber Guard book. Whip Up can be done without releasing double unders! Whip back requires me to release the lockdown.
* If I study this stuff well, my game will improve dramatically.
* Did we retire the GodFather as a name? The name doesn't make it in to the warmups where we see the half plex from quarter guard to lockdown and from lockdown to full guard.

My mind asplode. Thoughts from smarter people than me?

Have you checked out the 'whip down'? Might be what you are locking for.

In episode 15, Eddie goes through how to escape when your opponent controls your head (karate chop the arm and shrug your shoulders - look to create space/sweep) and offers an alternative in episode 71 & 72 as well.

The Whip Down is one of my favourite techniques… especially against people who down know the system :D

Sweet, that's the one I was looking for. Obviously, I have a long way to go in my terminology and basic knowledge.

So can anyone tell me if the Whip Up has changed? When we're doing this whip back whip up thing, do we release the lockdown and just swing like that? Or am I getting techniques confused?

And is Half Plex the new name for the Godfather when you don't get the sweep but do wind up in full guard?

- i think the plan b (with or without twist back) is used when you get into the dog fight and can't knee tap and drive through
- the half plex is used when you whip up and aren't in a good enough position to get to the dogfight (opponent has too good a whizzer or is applying too much pressure)

* Both the Half Plex and the old Twist Back Plan B combo involve bending the leg back at that weird angle (as does the Godfather!)
- i don't think the half plex requires that leg bend (or not what i remember, i could be wrong)

- i think the GodFather is still there, i don't think eddie has really been showing it in any of the episodes or warmups, the half plex is pretty much the same w/o the pressuring of the leg to the outside before taking them over
- and again, i think this is BEFORE getting up to the dogfight

but things might have changed as you said, i'm not 100% sure

Hey Josh!

You're right, this could definitely use some clearing up. I used to ask myself these questions a lot (i still do actually), but i think the main difference from the twist back and the plan B are that on one of them you are i. The dog fight and on the other you are on your side. Also whether you "C cup" the leg might make a difference as well.

And as far as whipping up and letting go and pushing, that never really worked for me so i dont do it i just get on my side a d use the underhooks to move and adjust my body. Giving them up to push would always open up a window to loose the underhook for me.

You are right about the godfather bending the leg. Im pretty sure that one happens when they have you in head and arm.

Hopefully eddie can clarify all of the names for these positions. :)

Thanks for helping me fill in the gaps. Sometimes I miss foot or leg details in MTS if the camera angle isn't ideal or this or that. It's not always going to be as easy as being in-person in a class, right? So I appreciate the help.

Do you find that it is easy to contort their leg? Do you have to be sneaky about it? Quick? Strong?

About the whip up. You pull your legs up like usual, angry rainbow that's called i think, and you uppercut his armpit with your bicep.
