Seeking advice for kids who want to compete.

My kids are enrolled in a 10th Planet school but the school has made it clear that the school is not geared toward competition. They are getting about 30 minutes of BJJ every Tuesday and Thursday it's generally enough to cover one technique and drill it a few times.

My kids are also wrestlers and have done a bit of Judo as well.

I have no intention of leaving the school they are in however they have voiced interest in competing in No-Gi BJJ and I don't forsee that they are going to get what they need to do this in the near future.

I have considered taking them to the gi BJJ classes that are taught at our Judo club to supplement what they are learning. Is this a good idea? Or will they be better off trying to find somewhere that will do no-gi?

10th Planet school not geared toward competing???! Never heard of such thing!

I was thinking the same thing when i read this. If the kids want to compete in No GI, then i would keep them in no gi training.

Not trying to make you call anyone out, but your profile picture doesn't list a 10th Planet school. Is the 10th Planet school you are with listed on the location page on this site? If not.... let us know.

Final Round is where 10th Planet Ann Arbor (Michigan) is based. And to be clear, I didn't post this to cause any trouble, they have been very, very reasonable and up front about this.

Too late.

I dont see a problem with this at all. If the school isnt geared for competition, then you just compete by yourself. We were like this at our old gym, Cora was the only one competing consistently and I have to teach myself jiu jitsu in order to coach her. Your kid can train for competition with the regular class, just go harder than those other kids. We have to work with what we have available to us. Then maybe when your kid doing well, others might follow your example.

Currently there is no live rolling going on. I am used to having to get on the mat to help the kids from wrestling so I am not uncomfortable with that but I am not qualified at all to do so with JJ just yet. Some of it I think probably comes from the fact that I am used to two to three hour sessions of wrestling for them with tons of live wrestling, and three hour boxing sessions with them. The class is high quality instruction. But only thirty minutes twice a week is not enough in my opinion to develop any sort of competitive skill level. Particularly if they are going to end up going up against kids who are on the mat a lot more then that.
