Vids from last performance and thoughts

Hello all i competed over the weekend at fellow 10th planet bro Stan Myaskovskiy's Checkmate submission only tournament. I trained fairly hard for this comp with regular trips to 10th Planet Ann Arbor to put in work with Coach Adlai Cleveland. Overall i was highly disappointed with my performance enough so that i beat myself up and pretty much shut down my last 3 matches. I am not proud of this fact. I am very very competitive i do this not just for my health and well being but also cause i do want to be the best and someday teach as well. When i have piss poor performances along with attitude it makes me question why i do this at all, disgusting right? All propr out to the competitors and the promotion everyone brought their A game. I was in the HW division with a good mix of blue and purple belts. Icluding John Mejia and Josh Moody out of red schafers camp dude was a freak. My personal assessment is i need to keep drilling offensive attacks and lose weight. Hw is just not were i belong i feel to be competitive i should be 205 or possible lower. So i came here for stern assessment and thoughts from my peers thank you all. I hope some of you higher rank purple and above will chime in on good things i do and bad. Thank you 10P4L

First match i was a lil eager jumped right into this guy did great with his series. On the toe hold my ankle popped and he let go i was fine and wanted to keep competing but we really couldnt come to an agreement on were to start from so i finally agreed to just give it to him as a submission even though there was no tap and no verbal.

2 match against the beast himself this match was the one i was most worried about the week prior i knew John just competed at ADCC trails and as a blue belt i felt like i was going to get destroyed. Coach Cleveland has been working core fundamentals with me on positional control and i think thats what kept me alive in this one. Also was a lil controversy in this one towards the end he thought i tapped in the roll during a Kimura. I have watched video i dont think i seen anything i felt bad cause this was my second match with some weird thing to happen in it but overall was a good match.

My 3rd match by this point i was starting to feel a lil broken down with my attitude there was some spots i could of been more aggressive and just held back. match went to a draw.

Gotta get that lockdown when playing half in That first match also gotta actively defend that toe hold. Respect that shit, even if it's not doing anything

Hey mate, I'm not going to offer technical advice as there are way more qualified people on here for that. All I would say is maybe you're being a bit hard on yourself? I've followed your journey both on here and fb (in a non stalking way I promise :D )and you have made major improvements in the last couple of years. I'm sure if you looked back 12 - 24 months ago objectively you would see that. Just in weight terms alone you have done well.

So you had a bad day in a comp, it's not the end of the world. I'm sure everyone on here as had similar days where they were expecting to perform better than they actually did. Sometimes the internal pressure and the want to succeed can severely hamper performance. What's important now is how you move forward. What lessons can you take from this experience? What would you change / do differently next time?

In the future, when you are teaching, what would you say to one of your students who experiences this? I'm sure you would tell them that it is just one bump in the long and winding road that is the jiu jitsu journey and the important thing is to learn and keep persevering.

No controversy brother, I thought you tapped, you said you didn't and I believed you. I just didn't want you to go home with a broken wing or me be the asshole who didn't respect a tap. You did great man!
