Checkmate sub only tourney results and some play by play

Wow, we had a great tourney our little club, Lake effect Jiu jitsu (former yooper hotbox) did great. Two champions and one second place and 3 of the top five fastest sub award. So great! I'm will post the breakdown and some play by play as I get them done, so check back. Some video's have already been posted by competitors but we will try to fill up the thread with the matches. They were so good, and there was a bunch of them!!

We’ll, I’m going to try and give some of my thoughts on our little comp we had this weekend.
Subs, Subs, and more subs. Last year we had a 76% sub rate, can we better that this year??
Wow, the under 155 guys sure brought the subs to the match. This division was stacked when I was filling out the brackets, and it did not disappoint. Every single match ended in a sub! That is 29 straight subs from the little guys. The average match time was on 1 minute 83 sec. Three of the top five fastest sub trophies went to this division. I think we saw two no-gi baseball bat chokes, couple of marcelotines, some leg locks, dead orchards and one mat nap darce finished from guard. Can’t wait to watch vids again. Everyone did great, but Shaughn Kern and Stan Myaskovskiy soon emerged as the pack leaders. They were tied 15-15 going into the 6th round were Stan suffered his first loss to Dave Brown. Stan and Shaughn were set to face each other in the final round 7 with Stan trailing 15 to 18. Having scored enough points to secure second place and his spot in the finals, Stan did not need the win. But in the spirit of the comp, they went straight to work on getting the sub. Stan pulled of the win in just 2:24. Tying Kern 18-18. This set up a thrilling under 155 final. Stan had the confidence of the previous win, and was able to pull of the win for the cash. We got things rolling for the day with the big guys Mens 195+ and the Women. The mens 195+ bracket got started off right with straight subs in the first round. There were only 7 beasts in this bracket, giving a bye to one person in each round. Out of the 22 matches, 15 went down in subs. Steller performance for a division known for stalemates due to two immovable objects meeting. After 3 rounds it looked close between John Meija, Jesse Veium, and Joshua Moody. By the fifth round Jesse and Joshua began to pull away. Were they eventually met in the final round that finished in a draw. Setting up another awesome final match between the two of them. It was a tough final but Joshua pulled out the win with a no-gi baseball bat choke. What would turn out to be the 4th such sub of the tourney.

Opposite the Mens 195+ bracket we had five women go to war in this extremely demanding format. Nine out of the ten matches ended in Subs! Two women were neck and neck halfway through the bracket, Kristen Meyer and Cassandra Alfeby. At 7-7 going into the fifth and final round it looked like these two would meet in the finals to decide things. But sitting in third place was Amanda Wyatt with 5 points. And Kristen had a bye in the last round so she was going to finish with 7 points. Amanda could bump her total to 8 with a sub victory over Sarah Jacobson. I can’t wait to see video of that match! Amanda was able to get the sub and seal her ticket to the finals. Cassandra was able to secure a sub in the final round and move her total to 10 leading the women’s prelims, setting her up as the favorite to win the finals. After a serious battle, Cassandra was able to submit Amanda to take home the cash. Be sure to check out this final match vid!

Mens 171-195. After two rounds it looked like Nick Lauer and Jeff Tadriff. Both laying down subs in the first two rounds. By the third round William Robinson had entered the picture. Then things got interesting! After the 6th round Lauer had sealed the top prelim spot, but his finals opponent was really up for grabs in the final round. Tim Hiley, Alex Kim, Jeff Tadriff and William Robinson all had a chance to get subs in the final round to move to the finals. Robinson was in position to take it, leading with 12 points. First up was Alex Kim vs Tim Hiley. Alex could move to 13 points with a sub and Tim could end with 14 if he could sub Alex. I don’t think many realized what a close race this was. Tadriff was faced with the challenged of having to sub a cautious Lauer to put him into position to go to the finals. He was unable to do so and the match ended in a draw, Giving Jeff 1 point to move his total to 12. Putting Jeff in a three way tie with Hiley and Robinson for the final spot against Lauer. Robinson was the only one remaining with the power to control his own fate. He needed at least one point for the draw in his match against Kurt Brushaber. Robinson was able to sub Brushaber to solidly secure his place in the finals. In the final, Lauer came out looking for the sub like a crack addict looking for his next fix. Robinson gave a first class effort, but was unable to fend of the sub from Lauer. Be sure to check out the vid of this match, it was intense.

I am so stoked we decide to give a Masters absolute division a try. I feel our format really lends its self to us older guys with more technique and brains left than we do body. You can really use skill and brains to replace some of the physical need for 8 matches in one day. Back to the roots of BJJ. However, that does not mean they took it easy. 19 out of the 29 matches ended in subs. After three rounds it looked like anybody’s game. Tim Tyson and Jeremy VanHulle began to pull ahead after 5 rounds with Patrick Dutton lurking just behind. With a loss and a draw in the final two rounds, VanHulle opened the door for Dutton. Tyson sealed the #1 seed final spot with his Fastest sub of the night 10 sec Guillotine. I’m serious, the fastest sub of the day came from the masters division! Dutton came thru with a draw and a win in the final two rounds to secure his spot in the finals against Tyson. Tim Tyson was able to bring it home with the sub over Dutton. I forget the finish right now, hopefully the vid surfaces!

Jui Jitsu fans should take note of the 156-170 division results. Nathan Mortson and Travis Karpinnen (division winner from last year) met in round #1 match #1 and went the full 7 minutes for the draw. Ken Sitsler and Alex Dupras took the lead after the first round with fast subs. However, both fell victims to subs in the second round, bringing the bracket back to anybody’s game. Nathan and Travis both pulled off under one minute subs. Shane Clifford came on in the second and third rounds to bring him into the mix. After six rounds Shane had collected 11 points while Nathan, Travis and Connor Landick were tied with 12 each. Up first in round 7 was Shane Clifford vs Joseph Espinoza. Shane needed the win to pressure the leaders. He pulled it off putting him in the driver’s seat with 14 points. Travis was up next and out to prove a point with a blazing fast 32 second sub of Anthony Schulist. Travis took over the driver’s seat with 15 points. It was down to the last match of the last round. Nathan Mortson vs Connor Landick. A draw in this match would give the finals spot to Shane with 14 points, leaving Nathan and Connor with just 13 each. Nathan was able to get the sub in just 1:42 over Connor to tie Travis’s 15 points. Nathan is a beast with solid wrestling and a killer armlock from Judo side. Travis new he could draw with Nathan from their first meeting in round #1, but the smaller Travis was unsure if he could sub him. Knowing that the Eddie Bravo OT rules were in effect for the finals, Travis had a plan to rely on him Jiu Jitsu to keep him safe for the 10 minute of regulation time. Travis secured guard quickly and played a safe but offense guard game, knowing that if given the chance at the wresters back he stood a real chance at victory. Having Nathan in your guard for 10 minutes would be like holding onto a grizzly bear for 10 minutes. The first round of OT resulted in some very fast escapes. Travis threw out a very fast escape to Nathan second attempt. Travis slide the choke under Nathan’s very fast on his next attempt and went for a wild ride, holding on with determination and getting the tap and the Victory! You must see this OT. Travis commented after, that he was able to use Jiu Jitsu to beat the wrestler. What a bracket!

Well, these guys and girls did it. They beat last years 76% sub rate. We had 137 actual matches in the prelims and 108 of them ended in subs. That is a 78.8% sub rate. That is a job well done folks! Thank you to all competitors. That is for subs within the regulation 7 minutes match. The is no OT during prelims. Matches can and do end in draws. Most of the matches ended in under 3 minutes. 68% of the subs came in less that 3 minutes. No stalling here!

For next comp we were discussing having a team title. So just for fun I ran the numbers for this year, Every point you scored went toward team total. If you won Finals you received 6 points toward team title. Again this is just an unofficial fun thing based on the gym info you listed during registration.
