Around 28:00 Rener goes into Gracie JJ vs BJJ.
Huh! Thanks for sharing. Verbal Grappling sounds right up my alley.
Thx for the post. I enjoyed this conversation. As usual I found myself agreeing with Rener most of the time.
I don't think you can just highjack the definition of Gracie Jiu Jitsu just because your last name is Gracie. This is the first time I've ever heard of BJJ with ground and pound referred to as Gracie Jiu Jitsu, it's just MMA sparring (which I love throwing in to training once or twice a week). I also don't agree with the other guy saying that you drop one or two belts during MMA sparring. Just sparring with good training partners off my back I've been able to land plenty of submissions, although it is a different game that you have to get used to. MMA has proved that "sport" jiu jitsu is a legit background. Someone who is a superior grappler is going to find a way to impose their will in a "street scenario" even if they like to fuck around with berimbolo, x guard, inverted guards, or any other sport oriented techniques in the training room. (not sure why he lumped butterfly guard in there with those techniques). Additionally, if I had 6 months to teach someone how to defend themselves against whatever ass hole on the street life might throw their way, I sure as hell wouldn't train them in a gi. Rener telling the story about the Australians not knowing how to handle a guy bench pressing them off of mount is pretty laughable. That just says that they're shitty grapplers, any spazzy white belt or wrestler that comes in to our gym never escapes any blue belts mount. All I got out of this is that Rener believes more in MMA sparring than in pure grappling. Which is why 10th Planet to me is an MMA ready system (emphasis on clinching and punch defense). Ok rant over my bad
Yeah, the "GJJ" thing annoys me. As if BJJ is the generic and GJJ is the brand name stuff.
Annoying.
At the same time, maybe this is momentum and direction for Prof Bravo to work with Rener on Combat Jiu Jitsu. :D
Seriously. They drill for strikes. The 10p system is built with striking in mind.
Potential alliance to drive awareness of how striking should shape our grappling?
I think most BJJ adapts pretty well when you add in strikes, the 'drop two belts' thing sounds crazy to me. When I've worked with MMA gloves on I didn't feel like I had to change anything real drastically. He's been using all this to separate the Gracie Academy 'brand' and it's some excellent marketing.
He has some valid points too though. Consistency with basics is extremely important, so a detailed set of basics curriculum for affiliates is great. The big one to me is when he mentions getting more white belts to continue training, that's a real tough thing to balance. You can keep them from rolling the way they are to reduce injuries but are they still getting a real enough experience with these self defense style rolls to be able to apply on a resisting opponent? Also he has to keep the striking with MMA gloves very very very light, beginners have terrible control and a solid punch to the eye is going to cost you a student. So if you do that and dial it back they aren't getting real full intensity rolls until after blue belt, which sounds like for a lot of their schools people can expect a blue belt in a year.
It's tough because if you dumb it down to keep everyone happy you'll have more students but it's going to lose some of it's legitimacy. Personally I disagree with the guy, I think just having guys roll off the bat with higher belts having some good vision on the mat to step in if new guys get heated and having a set of fundamentals that deal with strikes are all you need.
He sure does push the berimbolo/x-guard stuff, they love to name off that stuff as something sport schools teach that's going to get you killed. Maybe there's schools where that's the focus right off the bat but man I haven't seen it.
I had to put Cjj on the back burner because I couldn't find anymore opponents. I have a ton of 10p guys down but that's it.
CJJ 10th Planet vs Gracie Academy would have been real cool. And it would sell.
