10th planet Austin will probably be his best bet. He should only be a little over an hour away.
Thats too far for him to drive.
Austin is the closest spot to him for some high level 10th Planet knowledge. Their drills are extremely good for beginners and advanced students. They've also done really well in competition.
I'm three hours away and I go as often as I can. But, I'm dedicated to 10th Planet and my Jiu Jitsu overall. If he's just starting out, he likely doesn't realize how much he's going to love it yet, so maybe he can find somewhere closer to train that will help start that fire. When he's ready, he'll find a way to make the trip.
I heard Eddie Bravo gave a guy a blue belt who walked, or hitch hiked to a seminar he was doing. Talk about epic dedication.
