So when someone's placing pressure on me (ie. Side control or knee on belly) should I be relaxed? I always instinctively tense my abs because if I don't then I'd not be able to breathe.

Shrimp and snatch a leg for lockdown half or go full guard. So yes you want tension but with purpose, control, and direction. You don't want to be a limp pin cushion while you get your belly smashed and you also don't want to just lay there patiently tensing cause you'll exausting yourself. Hope that helps.
