find the techniques you know will work, believe in them, drill them and make them second nature so that when you compete you wont have your mind preoccupied on what you should do next
Don't let your nerves get the best of you. Stay calm and relaxed. Make sure to properly warm up so you don't gas early, I didn't see many people warming up at my tournament, I looked a little awkward warming up and staying warm between matches. I didn't have any problem staying gassed even with only 2 weeks notice coming off a 3 month break of doing nothing. Don't concentrate on getting a submission just get the points and if a submission appears before you then seize it. Snatch up the first points with the take-down don't sit their and be tied up in the clinch work on breaking the clinch for the initial take-down. Drill some clinch breakers a few days before the match and keep them in mind. Oh yeah almost forgot, watch the movie "Red Belt" repeatedly.

Since this subject comes up all the time I vote we sticky Herzog's Competition preparation post.
Work on your cardio.
dont blow your load in the first 10 seconds, relax and most important have fun.
Got my first tournament coming up in may. Gracie Grappling Cup May 28th in San Antonio. Hope I find some more 10th planet guys there so Im not out numbered!!!
I'm also doing my first tournament on May 21. Not too sure what to expect. I'm just hoping I don't get killed.
Dont go to early
your going to hype yourself up way to much and get a mental overload
stick to your game plan and if it fails than go home and fix the problems you had
