Promotion Authority and Criteria

Just curious...

Who is allowed to promote and to what level?
I have heard lots of different variations of this topic, the most common being that a person can promote someone else up to one belt below their own. Example: A brown belt can promote up to purple, and a purple belt can promote up to blue. I've read that a blue belt can promote up to third degree white. I've also been told that only brown belts and above can promote. How much of this is true? Does it vary among schools?

What is an approx. requirement for promotion to each belt level?
I know that this will vary widely from place to place but some black belt or brown belt knowledge would be great.(As well as knowledge from any other belt levels.)

A purple belt can promote to blue with permission from Eddie, I think. Brown can't promote to Purple but can also recommend to Eddie. Blacks can only promote to Brown.

The requirements to get promoted for each belt level are putting time in, having fun, and getting better. Being humble about it helps too!

Browns, Purples and affiliate intructors that are Blue Belts can promote up to Blue Belt.

Does this apply only to 10th Planet JJ or BJJ also?

imo i think a belt promotion has to be earned through competing and representing your school whether its 10th planet or whoever, i know alot of students do get higher belts that way and imo thats the right way. when i was competing in judo, my teacher would give us a higher belt depending on how we did in a tournament, we had to earn that thing through bumbs and bruises from tournament battles. thats just my opinion and im not saying the other ways are wrong, i would prefer seeing everyone earn their belts through tournaments though thats all. ive seen guys look great in class only to choke in tournaments, no pun intended, plus like i said above its representing your school and the name stamped on your school.

I think that only a Black Belt has the authority to grant any promotion, even to blue. To support that assumption, if you were to seek membership into the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), you'll be required to fill out a form with your personal information, your belt rank, and you'll need the form to be signed by a recognized BJJ Black Belt. Without that signature, you aren't getting recognized as any rank.

With 10th planet, it sounds like Eddie has decided to allow others to give promotions to certain ranks on his behalf. But ultimately, those promotions have merit because it is given per the guidelines laid out by Eddie. If you were to attempt to become a recognized member of the IBJJF, you'd still need Eddie's signature to make your rank legit in the IBJJF's eyes.

the way i understand it. 2nd degree black belts and above can promote someone to black belt.

why wouldn't black belts be able to promote there own black belts? That the way it works in traditional bjj and Edie promoted black belts before he was a 2nd degree bb.

Can I self promote myself to my 2nd white belt a la "Art Marshal?" It only takes 9 years to get one =D.

man i almost choked laughing at that crap, this guy is a joke. he said he trained with rerun, i guess rerun took up bjj after they cancelled the show ( whats happening ). i wonder if raj and dwayne are his training buddies
