0.5 AU is pretty close actually, we may feel the drive by :)
Well, the Moon is 0.0027 AU away and it's bigger than most of the kuiper belt objects found thusfar. So far it's presence has proved fairly benign; even quite beneficial.
0.5 AU is still 46,500,000 miles away. At Mars' closest approach it's 34,100,000 miles away (which is about 0.3667 AU). I'm not panicking...
