What do you guys use in tournaments/mma or in class (standing and from knees) to actually get to grappling that has good success?
When i attack from hand fighting and try to get under/over hooks ect i always seem to get in a bad position. what do you guys do?

Modified Collar tie for duckunders, singles, doubles, High C's, Ankle Pick
Russian Tie for the same shots
Greco overhook for flying armbars and the same shots as above
Any of the throws from the backstep can be effective(hip toss, head steal, seat belt throw,etc)
There is a Satelite tie that is a pain(jaw)/blood choke that most people give away position because it sucks
Forehead in your opponents temple is the most effective control that I have seen
Also pull the trigger dont wait to get settled in the tie
Lately, I've been trying to hit low single legs.
I shove their head back and then shoot. Usually they'll push forward and throw my hand off their head as I'm shooting which weights their lead leg at the moment that I am grabbing it.

I like shooting in for single legs as well, although I have better success with it in mma than grappling, as I wait for them to commit to striking before dropping level and shooting forward. I think I might start trying your method of pushing the face away as a setup for when grappling.Quote:

He said the trick to it was to shoot right after you push their head. Don't wait and see if they are reacting correctly, just assume that they will and shoot. Which was helpful advice, because I just thought that wrestlers always had an intrinsic sense of knowing when to shoot. But he just assumes everything will go as planned and his muscle memory makes up the difference.
That thoughtless sense of commitment in my setups has helped tremendously.
