New To BJJ
Hey guys, first of all let me say I am new to the forum and new to brazilian jiu jitsu in general.
I just started about a month or so ago and am really loving it. I am very intrigued by the 10th planet system and would love to learn it because I like no gi jiu jitsu as opposed to with the gi.
I am still really new but I wanted to know what books/ dvds you guys would recommend for someone totally new?
Do I need to get good at "normal bjj" before learning the 10th planet style or would it be cool to jump right in?
Anyway thanks guys!

I'm new here myself (and indeed new to 10th Planet JJ). Obviously, being new doesn't qualify me to offer too many pearls of wisdom on the subject, however on the subject of books, I can definitely recommend any of Eddie Bravo's, in particular the "Mastering" series.
Go get yourself a copy of "Mastering The Rubber Guard" for starters; I'm not just saying it because I'm on a 10th Planet forum but honestly it's the best book of its kind I've seen, and trust me I've seen a lot of training books.
Just for the stretching routines alone I'd say "Mastering The Rubber Guard" is worth the money!

man I did straight gi training for my first year. As soon as I got to do no gi, I was hooked, and shortly thereafter I found 10th planet on youtube when looking up techniques. To answer your second question, you can do whatever you want to. I would even recommend you spend time learning 10th planet stuff while you're learning gi stuff, but it depends on what you want to do. Do you want to learn all of jiu jitsu, or just gi stuff, or just no gi stuff. One thing I've learned is that no gi techniques translate to gi very well, and not so much vice versa. Keep in mind, 10th planet is just as fundamental as anything you'll learn elsewhere (a common misconception is that it's for "advanced" practitioners only, which is simply not the case). Enjoy training, it's a great sport and a lot of fun. It's like a human video game after a while, you'll love it.

Oh and I have a hard time coming to terms with "bjj". No gi is more like american jiu jitsu to me. Am I alone on that?

I started with the Gi, trained that way for about three and a half years, didnt hear about 10th planet until about 5 months ago, and im totally hooked, its changed the way I do jiu jitsu totally! Both comments above are spot on, Mastering the Rubber Guard is an amazing book, and full of things that will be sure to help you, especially if you are just getting started ;).

I have had a lot of success with buying the DVD's and ripping them to my iPod. Then whenever I can, I'll watch some Eddie Bravo. I may watch it on my way to class, during free mat time, or even when someone starts talking about Twilight.
I don't have the time to be at the gym every day, but I figure the more times I can watch the moves, the better my mat time will be.

Thanks for all the replies guys!
Yeah, I mainly want to stay no gi grappling, it seems like much more fun to me.
Hey Scott, what DVDs would you recommend??
And for books I'm definitely going to pick up Mastering the RubberGuard
But any othe recomendations for learning all the basics. i heard Jiu Jitsu Unleashed is good but if anyone has any other stuff, please let me know.
Thanks again guys

@gcal
You definitively want to buy 10th Planet All-Stars

I highly recommend (in addition to Eddie's books) Saulo Ribiero's JiuJitsu University book. It is also published by Victory Belt and is an invaluable reference tool when trying to figure out some direction for various defensive positions and positional basics in general.

Thanks again
Alright guys, I'm thinkin I'm going to buy "Mastering the RubberGuard" and "jiu jitsu Unleashed"
Also, the 10th plaent all stars dvd link looks really good. I probably need to hold off on that cause everything is kinda pricey but maybe I'll get that one later.
Thanks again everyone for the advice
