Scientific Fighters???

Does anybody else feel like the zombie apocalypse is already upon us? Everywhere I go I see tools of nationalism, religion (:mad:), and consumerism... but rarely science. Less than 1% of our politicians have been scientifically literate. Our last scientifically literate president might have been Thomas Jefferson. Study science! Teach your children science! School ruins science and math for children by making it excessively hard/fast paced which is where ALL progress comes from (that and maybe the occasional examination of history)... but yeah... science. Who's with me? And who would like to have their mind changed :)

you know what i don't like is, how vague the term your using is. what exactly are you referring to when you say "science"?

an explanation of why most politicians are not science literate could be that politics in itself isnt classified as a type of science. its the same as high school teachers that can teach english but know nothing about maths. if they studied science, they probably wouldnt have pursued a career in politics..

Sure, science is how the world really works, and sure science is the way to progress as a world community, but it's boring and repetitive and difficult. Why not teach about a magic man in the sky who puppet masters all creation via magic? You'll get MUCH more money, *if you're the head of an organization that does this* and it's tax free. You can also make stuff up as you go along with no evidence other than word of mouth, group think, testimonial, and ancient texts. The "scientific fighters" can fight the zombies with guns, tanks, laser beams, explosives, etc. I can just chant some sacred incantations and make myself invincible =D....right?

True science has a couple of characteristics that make it a desirable way of looking at the world. It is not comparable to a religion is that it is not a set of beliefs, it is, rather, a method of forming beliefs.

First, true science is open to all ideas. These ideas must be carefully tested and variables that could effect results identified and controlled so as to prove or disprove a hypothesized explanation of why something works the way it does.

Second, it must be replicable; other scientists must be able to reproduce your results using the same methods. Modern scientific theories are submitted for peer review before publishing where they are carefully scrutinized by many other experts of the same field.

There might be some things that I'm missing, but yeah. This is what I mean when I say "science" -- a way of looking at the world. We will never have true science as long as the resources to conduct scientific research are controlled by money.

How about we focus on literacy as well?

Money is paid to scientists for preserving the status quo which is against all scientific theory. Bogus studies and financially endowed lobbyists make sure that it's always easy to call a scientist a quack when he presents data that is out of the ordinary.
At this point the scientific field is not too far off from politics in which it's not what you know and how you do things, but who you know and how much you pay them - or how much money you make them.
When you look at the money put forward to "defense" and the amount put towards Physics - it's no wonder people believe in noah's ark.
I'm not stabbing at religion some people really benefit from it and I'd never assume I could know any answers.
But religion needs the exact same thing science and politics needs : separation from business.
When there is money to be made, corruption will always win

how bout we focus on making religion and science the same thing like it was to human beings when we first started 'seeking the truth'

Science is constantly trying to prove itself WRONG to advance *ie Scientific Method and the crowning jewel of science which is the Double Blind Placebo Controlled Study/Experiment." Religion is based on faith, or the belief in something without evidence, or belief in something despite overwhelming amounts of contradictory evidence. Resurrection, magic, miracles, etc.

It's overwhelming evidence based belief vs faith based belief.
