I can get my knees to the floor in a butterfly stretch but only if my back is against something or I have my hands on the floor but when I lean forward my knees come up. Could it be my groin, back, or hamstrings I need to stretch more?

keep stretching, relax, breathe, cuss, fuss, flush. Repeat 5 x daily.
Try stretching your butterfly backwards on your knees make sure your feet are touching and base out on your forearms then start to sink your hips to the ground maybe that will help you.
