Facebook? You Got It?

Spent too long thinking about what Facebook actually is recently and was chattin with friends earlier about it and we all decided it's mad creepy to just display yourself to the Internet in that way, but the pros outweigh the cons and no one wants to be some chump living under a rock while everyone else hits up Facebook.

Then we switched to conspiracies such as it tracking you, selling your info, government collating info so as to market to demographics and manipulate people etc.

Does anyone think about this shit?
Do you have Facebook?
If not, why not?

Dude, when u post, I feel like I'm playing metal gear solid from back in the day, when the general sketches out and starts talking shit. That's literally how I hear your posts as I read them.

An Australian IT consultant dude claimed that Facebook tracks all your web browsing even when you're logged off. Apparently each time a website has those s"hare links" with Facebook it keep some modified cookies so doesn't matter of you remove them they know where you've been.
Im on my phone so I can't send you the link to the article but yeah I'm sure facebook works hand to hand with the government. It's an awesome source of info on your activities.

Best thing to do if you're paranoid is to just live offline, don't use any cards lol pay everything in cash, don't use a cellphone ( telecom companies record your text messages up to 1 year). Emails have been logged for decades now...
Best thing to do if you need to discuss about controversial subjects is to actually call someone. Unless the authorities are already after you and are listening to your convos it's the safest way to keep your conversation confidential.

That requires a lot of effort these days if you want to stay off the grid. even your shopping can be logged with those "discount cards"

So yeah go pay everything in cash, don't use computers, discount cards, no cellphones no nothing hahaha

Apple works with the local authorities when it comes down to locating people. I read an article that was saying that the FBI was able to listen to people's conversation by turning their cellphones into a microphone even when the phone was turned off.

An high school got in trouble for using softwares on their students laptops. It was meant to be used in case of a laptop being stolen. The software would start the webcam on the laptop and should stream live. Some parents got pissed off or someone at the school ( an adult was caught watching kids doing whatever they were doing in front of their laptops not knowing someone was watching them)
Put some tape over your webcam people!

Yeah I fully agree with you. Thats what most of tonight's conversation was about really. But it comes down to pros and cons. You've gotta live on the grid to a certain extent but is Facebook really a necessity? I've got people checking me in places and shit. Then yesterday I'm posting some pics and it's like "oh this is your face, this is your friends face...we'll just tag them for you" to which I was pretty shocked at how far facial recognition technology has come and just how scary that is.

Not a necessity that's for sure. I only joined Facebook not so long ago. Now companies are also using Facebook to check out what kind of employee you are and stuff. Here in NZ 2 people got fired after having a rant on their Facebook page about their companies. You gotta be careful with what you say and who you let access your page.

I'm doing network engineering so I'm always interested with all those things.

But at the end of the day if you're not doing anything illegal you're fine :)
Just remember that anything you type leaves a trace lol even when you hit the delete button it has been recorded and stored somewhere
