DVDs and the coverage of the System

Hey again. I've been training BJJ for about 2 years at a traditional gi school. A few no gi classes are offered as well as MMA grappling classes.

The head instructor is a legit former competitor and very open-minded who regularly encourages looking up stuff on YouTube (viewer beware, though, of course). This dude has even encouraged checking out 10th Planet stuff before. He's definitely not a hater.

I've competed in BJJ and Judo tournaments and will do many more to come. My overall record sucks, but I enjoy the test. I'm an older fellow, so competition is pretty sparse. Plus, I don't have a huge competitive side, but I tend to think that most folks should do tournaments.

I'm not exactly sure how I learned of Eddie Bravo and 10th Planet JJ, but it seems that I've known of your existence since my beginning. Here's the question, finally. I have the 3 set DVDs covering the half guard (which I'm really starting to love right now since half guard happens a lot for me), rubber guard (not even gonna lie: I watched this one first, and it's starting to sink in), and spider web (which I may finally be ready to watch again). How much of the ever-evolving system would you say that material covers? Is this just the basics, etc.? I'm not looking for belts or medals; I just want to get a sense of the bigger picture.

I'm attending my first 10th Planet seminar tomorrow, and I'll be signing up for a paid membership after I finish this post. I'm sure I'll get my questions answered soon enough, but I welcome your input.

Off the top of my head, one thing that has changed since the MTRG dvd is that you don't whip up and post on your elbow. This exposes you to the D'arce and the Japanese necktie. Not sure if Eddie demonstrates whipping up to his elbow in the DVD, but I know that since then he has explicitly stated that you should whip up to your shoulder instead (something about Mayhem Miller D'arcing a bunch of students).

I noticed a bit of that on MTS 33. I've also noticed that this system has a ton of moves in it. Thanks.

It's hard to put an exact figure on how much material has been added to the system since the DVDs. Some of the stuff on Mastering the System is borrowed from other systems (The Marcelo passes, for instance), but there have definitely been some tweaks and new additions to what would be considered uniquely 10th Planet material. The 10th Planet All-Stars dvd has a bunch of newer stuff (relative to the release of MTRG) like Epstein's north-south variations, Denny's guillotine grip, and Bollinger's straight-jacket, to name a few.

On MTS, Eddie et al have introduced the whip-down as a new half-guard path, a capoeira counter to the dog-fight, the ham sandwich, can crusher to D'arce, and the mini-stomp, and several other techniques that I would define as 10th Planet in origin.

The 10th Planet system is diverse. What works for Marcelo Garcia is in the 10th Planet system. So
get all of Marcelo Garcia's instructionals you can. Mendes brother's instructional. Have you seen it?
Get it. Get any instructionals that show basic submissions and combos of submissions for that matter.
Get Popovitch's no-gi instructionals. All of the many Ryan
Hall instructionals are good. Leg locks are big in the 10th Planet system. Watch Chris Herzog teach leglocks.
Get Ryan Hall's 50-50 Guard. Gokor's Leglock instructionals. There are leg lock instructionals by Imanari,
Reilly Bodycomb, Vince Fields, Eric Paulson, Michael Jen, Cesar Gracie, Scott Adams, Roberto Drysdale,
Roy Harris, Roy Dean, Dean Lister, Justin Ellison, Din Thomas, Bas Rutten, Marco Ruas, Nicholas Starks,
and more.

One part of the system that isn't covered in the mastering the rubberguard is all the twister control stuff. The book is a good reference, I agree that if you wanna understand more modern 10th planet the mts series will help catch you up along with the 10th planet all stars dvd. If you have a moon base nearby you should definitely join, but the system has evolved quite a bit from mastering the rubber guard, however it's serves as a good base to get you familiar with how key positions work, the transitions tend to be a little faster and reduced but that dvd will really emphasize the objectives you should be shooting for. the details in transition is what seems to be getting fine tuned along with extensions such as double bagger, or things like the vaporizer which use the base system stuff with a bit of a new tweak.

Does any one know if there are plans for a second 10th Planet All-Stars DVD ?

btw also check out wolverines you tube series on the puppet master, there's 6. Nothing to difficult, but an in depth look at extensions from the rubber guard. I really like the rat guard that was posted the other month as well.
