Royce Gracie: “British fighters are 10 years old and still babies in grappling skills

Royce Gracie has advised British fighters to develop great skills in one style before trying to become rounded mixed martial artists, and believes it will take time before British fighters have jiu-jitsu skills at the very highest level in the sport.

Gracie, the Hall of Famer and the first UFC champion, told The Telegraph that he would advise developing fighters in the UK to stick to one discipline, and master it first. What would he advise young, aspiring fighters to do is to focus hard on becoming highly skilled practitioners of one martial art before attempting to become ’rounded’. Many new MMA fighters are considered hybrid fighters.

“You have to train, and train, but be good at one style. Pick one style, get very good at it, and then complement it with another style later.”

“Add the rest later. Learn one style, instead of learning MMA. What is MMA ? Jack of all trades, master of none.”

“Get good at one. Make a base. Have a base.”

“Watch the UFC Ultimate Royce Gracie. The new DVD that just came out. Look at the first UFC. I come out. It’s Art Jimmison. I dance around with him a little bit, shoot in, take him down. Surely the problem for British fighters at the highest level in the sport is that they have been losing on the ground. Dan Hardy in recent fights, Paul Daley against Josh Koscheck…

“You have to grow slowly. Before you go to University you have to go to kindergarten, then to high school. Right now in England they are about 10 years old [in ground skills]. I’ve been teaching in America 25 years, my brother was here 15 years before that so we have been here teaching all that time. They are babies in England right now, 10 years old…It takes time.”

“This is a strategy game. It’s as simple as that. You can’t think ‘I’m going in there, I’m going to hit him a few times, go for the takedown, hit him with a few elbows, take his back, and submit him…’ Is that a strategy ? No. It’s a wish. Strategy is when you figure out what your opponent is going to do, then you set up your game plan, either defensive, or offensive, or both…”

“You have to figure out your opponent’s game, so you can take him out of his game. Most likely, the strategy is constructed before, but can also be when you are in there. There’s plan A, plan B and sometimes you have to pull out plan C during the fight.”

The ‘UFC Ultimate Royce Gracie’ is two DVDs of Gracie’s fights, from UFC 1-5, the history of his family in the sport, and his contests with Nobuhiko Takata (2000), Kazushi Sakuraba (2000), and Hidehiko Yoshida (2003). Inside the book cover, several pages outline ‘The Gracie Way’.

When it began at UFC 1, in November 1993, few in the United States knew who the Gracies were, and when the skinny kid of the clan, Royce, was chosen to represent the family in the first UFC, many shielded their eyes, fearing for his safety against his more visually imposing opposition. “It was just the right time,” explains Gracie on the DVD. “I was the right size. I wasn’t bulked up and I didn’t look very scary, so to speak. It was just the right timing for me.”

He's not wrong, although I wouldn't say we're all 15 years behind. In terms of the amount of people doing it, maybe, but there are some top level guys here!

Mmmm.. learn all styles fully 1 by 1? Well Royce you proved that point a long time ago when climbing into the octagon with Matt Hughes! in UFC!

And though its certain Royce had been training (Gracie)Jiu Jitsu and striking a lot longer, and Matt had only trained as a wrestler before moving on to the MMA scene, it proves that after having trained just "Mixed Martial Arts" eg: Boxing, BJJ and Wrestling at once, he was still able to dominate the MMA scence for years AND prove to Mr Gracie how the sport had evolved!!

And as for us Brits being "babies" in Jiu Jitsu in comparison to to over there, well we are young (not babies) and keen and full of new ideas, problem being that the good ol US of A is buying all and every good and great trainer from around the world!! And at this rate its not gona be too long untill you have to be in America all the time to train/compete at top level.

I only agree on pure Jitz skills....but when it comes to MMA...he should shut the fuck up...he never evolved as a MMA fighter!!! Just pure Jiu-Jitsu losses in MMA now...every time.

the problem is that when it comes to any sport that requires technique & creativity, british people tend to struggle, Futbol, Boxing, Jiujitsu, mma, whatever, especially in futbol, the EPL or barclays premier league is the only league on earth where players with little to no skills with the ball can make millions of dollars, thats why very few brits can make it playing in conttinnental europe like Spain, Germany ect. british coaches at youth level put little value in technique & thats why even American soccer players like myself have way better technique then british soccer players. but it's not there fault, the UK wether just doesn't enspire creativity. & that shit goes back to there old military tactics of just taking turns shooting each other & thats why the colonys won using indian gurrilla tactics, the brits are playing tactical catch up in all sports

Actually Matt Hughes proves his statement. Royce is saying get really good at one thing before moving onto other things. Matt Hughes was great at one thing before doing other things. He was a great wrestler. He added other things. Royce didn't do so well evolving. But Hughes proves his point

It's true. You should try to master one thing. If you think about it, every champ has a base that they excel at. There are no "hybrid" fighters that are reigning champs. There is a reason Bisping will never be champ. He's one of those hybrid fighters that's a jack of all trades master of none. But seriously. Cain=wrestler. JDS= Boxing Bones Jones=Wrestler. Shogun= muay thai. Machida=Karate. GSP=used to be karate now wrestling. BJ= BJJ/boxing. Aldo= Muay Thai. Anderson=Muay Thai. Alistair= Thai. Fedor=Sambo. Bigfoot=BJJ. Werdum=BJJ. The list goes on.

All of the best fighters right now excel in one. Yes you have to be well rounded, but Royce's advice (although he doens't exactly exemplify it) is true. Get reaaaaaally good at one thing but learn everything else well.

With all due respect you don't really know what you're talking about. Do you even follow Boxing at all?

WBA Welterweight champion = Amir Khan (British)
WBC Super Middleweight champion = Carl Froch (British)
WBA Heavyweight Champion = David Haye (British)

Franz Beckenbauer (World cup winning player and coach and generally considered the greatest German player of all time) is on record for saying english youngsters up until the age of 14 were technically better then their German, Italian, French and spanish counterparts. However after that point many get caught up in the english drinking culture and other nations catch up to them.

Also the reason many english players do not play abroad is because they make far more money in the EPL then they would in other leagues. That does not stop the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, AC and Inter constantly courting english players like Rooney for example. Also if English players can't make it in other leagues like Spain tell how David Beckham won such rave reviews for his performances for Real Madrid? If English players have no skill why do their teams always do so well in the Champions league. Check how many times english clubs have been in the Champions league finals and semi-finals in the last decade. Even Tottenham, the 5th best team in England could beat the very best of Italy when they defeated Inter and AC last season before bowing out at the quarter final stage of the worlds premier club competition.

It appears your logic is based on assumption not facts. Using that same logic one could assume all Americans are fat stupid rednecks but obviously that is an untrue stereotype. Grappling is relatively new to the UK so that would be a more likely reason the skills in general are not as high as they could be. Time will tell if it improves or not.

I'd like to hear about the "real" reason we won.....if they even teach that we won. Do they teach that Britain just decided to pull out because the US wasn't worth it? british history books attribute the loss of the american war of independence to poor leadership on the british side. 'gentleman jim' burgoyne (one of the british generals) had an inability to adapt to his circumstances. he organised his army in the same manner as he would for a european war.
there were huge differences in the nature of the american theatre and the european theatre of war. the main difference was the lack of roads in america. this was to prove decisive to an army that stretched 3 miles while on the march. with roads, this would be no real problem. however, the unspoilt terrain of north america meant that the army could only march 2 miles a day. this effectively meant that the army was on any given spot for three days. which pretty much invites 'you rebel scum' to take advantage. couple this with extended supply lines (i.e. the atlantic ocean) and the threat of continental war and you've got a list of excuses that are up there with 'unmotivated bj' and 'shogun with bad knees'.
so, yeah, we get taught that we lost that war because of guerrila tactics and poor leadership. however (getting into counter factual history) even george washington admitted if we were still using longbows instead of muskets, y'all would've been fuckefd (that's an actual GW quote). so, while we swallow the bitter pill of that loss, we consoled ourselves by going on to conquer 2/3 of the planet after that (yes, we're ashamed now, but mainly because you lot do so now).

I suppose since Derrick said 'colonies' instead of just America specifically I was thinking in a broader worldwide scope of the whole British Empire. Each territory gained it's eventual independence for a variety of different reasons at different times. It's an oversimplification to make the statement below,

Obviously there are a number of factors and the issue is complex. Andy before explained it one way. There are also other alternative viewpoints as well using the same availible evidence so you can construct many different interpretations. Off the top of my head the Russian revolution had at least 30+ different interpretations as to why it actually occured.

At the 11 - 16 age range I think alot of British schools teach along the lines of what Andy wrote. Obviously past that you go into much more depth and you generally construct your own view based on the availible evidence.

David Becham who i love, is only good at set pieces & 60 yard accurate passes not technical dribbling, Roony good but not a slashing type forward, British teams do well in europe because there loaded with foreigners, even the FA complains about that, & Becham is the only brits who has been sucessful in europe,Mike Owen failed at madrid. as for EPL money you can make just as much in spain, germany, or italy , they just require a certain level of skills, & your smoking crack if you think british youth teams are the best in europe, more like the worst, whens the last time a british youth team has won the fifa youth world cup at u 17 or 20 level never, not even the euros, those who truly know Futbol in & out know that the Dutch have the best youth system in europe & are often called the brazilians of europe & coined the term total futbol, via johan croyff. & Arsenal is the only team in the EPL that uses total futbol, & it's full of frenchman lol, it's easy for brits to lie too & mislead uneducated american soccer fans & get coaching jobs hear in the U.S & suck it up. & it's British arrogance that gives most brits a false since of footballing superiority. but truly educated fans & players will never be fooled this. No offense but are you under 18? If so your comments would make more sense to me in that respect.

There are too many points to counter so I'ii just mention a few. If you honestly believe Italian, French and German players get paid the same as english players you are living on another planet. It's well documented the average wage of each league and it's a fact not a disputed opinion. Most of the other points you bring up would take too long to objectively outline in a comment and I'm not going to go into that much depth on a Jiu-jitsu site regarding football.

Also please read what I wrote. I never said British youth teams were the best in the Europe. I provided a quote from one of the greatest Football players of all time on the skills of British youngsters. I hope you understand his opinion will naturally carry more weight then yours no matter how 'educated' you believe you are.

So the WBC and WBA belts in Boxing are low budget belts are they? So what are the high budget one's then? The WBO and WBF? This map shows areas the British controlled at one time or another, not quite as much as 2/3...

i'm gonna have to stretch and say the british had control of the seas for a few centuries (yeah, i know, it IS a stretch).

Barcelona may be the best now, but you obviously forget the reign of Liverpool in the 70s and United from the 90s until present. The 70s when the squad was made up of mostly British and Scottish players.

To Andy thanks for clarifying the Lennox Lewis situation. Since he represented Canada at the Olympics and not Britain people just didn't take to him like Bruno. I let that racist remark from Derrick pass by because I thought he was just a little kid. However he says he is not apparently so not sure what to really say about that.

Liverpool , Chelsea, United, my club Arsenal, are all great clubs, but i'm not talking about club success records, i'm talking about the English players vs everyone else in terms of technique & creativity, & it's no secret that british players are lacking in technique, & lets not act like the English FA hasn't had many quote '' root & branch '' analysis of whats wrong with English futbol & the lack of technical development. certainly after the failure to qualify for euro 2008. & perhaps the 5-1 thrashing by Germany in 2010 lol, how does this relate too jiujitsu ?, well both are similar in that developing technique allows you to unlock your creativity if you have it. if your not a naturally creative person then you'll just be really technical but not creative. creativity is truly the driving force behind all jusjiujitsu, especially 10th planet, & creativity can't be unlocked without developing a certain amount of technique. with futbol & jiujitsu, i found in the early goings that i would have ideas in my head that i could not perform with my body until i developed a certain level of technique & that technique unlocked my creativity. it's no accident that the brazilians are the most technical & creative in both arts. the English invented futbol & the brazilians taught everyone how to play, the japanese invented jiujitsu, & the brazilians taught everyone how to play that too lol

if you're not trying to offend anyone: why are are you persisting with your xenophobia, when it's been made clear you are offending people? as far as i'm aware, it IS an accident the brazilians are the most technical and creative in football and jiu jitsu. the accident of the gracie brothers only being taught the beginnings of judo (and figuring out the rest as they went) led to brazil having the longest contact with the art.
the grinding poverty many brazilians find themselves in prevents a large number from being able to attend school or afford proper sports equipment. these two factors led many brazilians to come up with, and spend many hours using, substitute balls. in most cases these homemade balls were denser and slightly irregular in weight distribution, which leads to an increased ability to control the ball. this practice has since been put into practice in youth academies around the world, even in places where they refer to the sport as 'futbol'.

Liverpool , Chelsea, United, my club Arsenal, are all great clubs, but i'm not talking about club success records, i'm talking about the English players vs everyone else in terms of technique & creativity, & it's no secret that british players are lacking in technique, & lets not act like the English FA hasn't had many quote '' root & branch '' analysis of whats wrong with English futbol & the lack of technical development. certainly after the failure to qualify for euro 2008. & perhaps the 5-1 thrashing by Germany in 2010 lol, how does this relate too jiujitsu ?, well both are similar in that developing technique allows you to unlock your creativity if you have it. if your not a naturally creative person then you'll just be really technical but not creative. creativity is truly the driving force behind all jusjiujitsu, especially 10th planet, & creativity can't be unlocked without developing a certain amount of technique. with futbol & jiujitsu, i found in the early goings that i would have ideas in my head that i could not perform with my body until i developed a certain level of technique & that technique unlocked my creativity. it's no accident that the brazilians are the most technical & creative in both arts. the English invented futbol & the brazilians taught everyone how to play, the japanese invented jiujitsu, & the brazilians taught everyone how to play that too lol

I'm genuinely curious, are you suggesting that English people as a general rule are not creative? That's the sense I get from what you've said so far in this thread.

i'm not saying british athletes aren't creative at all, hell they created futbol ! i'm saying they don't focus enough on technique too unlock their natural creativity on a individual basis because not every person is creative. & futbol & jiujitsu are both a testament to brazilian creativity & self expression. And instead of getting angry, those of us who desire to be as good as they are in futbol & jiujitsu, should consider their criticism and perhaps look, listen, and learn from there example. i played in a all spanish league, & a lot of my latino friends say & spell it futbol, & in brazil it's futebol, & in old italian culture it's calchio italiano lol.
