damm that was close, he should have pinched his knees together
Did it have to do with how Vinny was over feeding him the arm? Does that angle transfer the pressure to the shoulder instead of the arm by putting the shoulder over Werdum's pelvis? There was some weird mechanical magic going on there.
i bet werdum is going to revise his arm bars now .
Werdum kept looking down the arm. I always thought that to fully extend the arm bar, you do not look at your opponent.
he had his crotch up in his armpit. Use that cup on the elbow as a fulcrum. it should snap then.
i like how you white belts are giving tips to Werdum... REALLLLLY guys, come the fuck on.
Just as amazing to rewatch as it was to watch it live!
Vinny is fighting tonight on Showtime. Anybody have a live stream?
On the live broadcast, the commentators were talking about Vinny intentionally turning away and getting his shoulder as high off the ground as possible - the effect was to diffuse some of the power into the shoulder instead of just the arm. I can't really explain it any better than that, but if you can listen to the broadcast the commentators will do a much better job than me of explaining.
What Tyler said about Werdum not pinching his legs together, was true. Everyone knows you have to pinch your legs together and of course Werdum knows that but he made a mistake. Look at when Werdum goes to finish the armbar, he opens his legs when he bridges, which relieved a lot of the pressure. What Jameson said was also a good point, Werdum was under Vinny's armpit. This means he was bending his shoulder, instead of his elbow. Another thing to point out, is that Werdum's feet weren't touching the floor, so he couldn't isolate the shoulder. Every time Werdum lifted his hips up, Vinny's shoulder went up with it. Shawn Williams was pointing this out at the event. Yes, Vinny's elbows are a little more flexible than the average persons. My elbows goes backwards a lot but if the armbar is done right, it will for sure snap the elbow. Also, whenever Werdum put Vinny's arm under his armpit, Vinny would start to escape, so that's why Werdum kept switching it back and forth. I disagree that the armbar was not finished just because of Vinny having slightly flexible elbows and he's just being tough. You can be tough all you want but it doesn't mean your arm won't break. This was a combination of Werdum making mistakes, Vinny realizing those mistakes and taking advantage of it, as well as Vinny having slightly flexible elbows. Again, no one is claiming that Werdum doesn't know how to do a proper armbar. He was probably tired or got wrapped up in the heat of the moment. No one performs everything they know perfectly when competing. There are always mistakes. I thought those comments about that white belt shit were fucked up. If they said something wrong, then point it out but they didn't, unless you guys think that it's good to not pinch your knees together when doing an armbar.
I imagine he knew that the submission wasn't working an quite possibly was trying to bait Vinny into a transition to another submission. I find it hard to believe that a multiple time world and adcc champ just forgot how to perform an armbar properly.
Holy shit, that was crazy - Vinny's arm must still be sore today from getting wrenched on for 3 minutes by a monster like Werdum.
I think it doesn't matter how tired Werdum is, he isn't going to forget to pinch his knees together or make some rookie mistake like that. However, I'll go on record saying that he would not have lost that match if he was training under the legendary master, Steven Seagal. SFS would have given Werdum-son some pointers on sharpening his technique 4 sure.
The real question is what Bruce Wayne would have done...
I'm not apologizing. Ever hear of Arm-Chair QB? Comments like that are ACJJ. I'm gonna go ahead and go with the fact that VINNY defended properly, knew what he was doing and not hear some whiney shit from a newbie on how Werdum didn't know what he was doing.
I'm not gonna critique him either, cause guess what...I'm not ADCC material. Werdum nearly won ADCC 2011 HW by armbar in the closing moments, but didn't because of insane competition. Nuff said.
There's nothing to debate. The video is right there. No one said Werdum doesn't know what he's doing, he obviously does but he did the armbar wrong. Unless he has some secret armbar technique where he opens his legs to relieve the pressure so it doesn't work. Pause at 1:22 and tell me that his knees weren't way apart. I could understand if he pinched his knee and isolated the elbow and it didn't work and then he started to try other things but he didn't. Just because someone does ADCC, doesn't mean they can't make mistakes and just because someone is better than you, doesn't mean that they're automatically right and you're wrong about everything.
Also, look at 1:22. Vinny's arm isn't bent back that far. I can bend my arm that far by myself. I get that there are certain things that you can't get perfectly but putting your foot down to the mat and squeezing your knees together are completely in your control. I understand that Werdum was probably spreading his knees out to stop vinny from back rolling but you can't finish the armbar like that.
Werdum was switching to the armbar under his armpit but every time he would try it, Vinny would roll his wrist and almost escape and Vinny eventually did escape like that but the armbar at in the beginning where he bridges up and had Vinnys thumb up, that was all on Werdum. Sure, if Werdum's crotch wasn't under Vinny's shoulder and under his elbow instead, he could've broke his arm without isolating the shoulder and spreading his legs out but it was just that combination of legs open, feet not touching the ground and under his shoulder, plus a flexible elbow that made it just enough for Vinny to hold on.
My mates comment on premier league football matches all the time, but neither of them are professional footballers - not even close (some of them will passionately disagree of course)! Are we not allowed to do the same?
Simple fact of the matter is Werdum has been competing at a high level for a decade

And because he was competing and in the heat of the moment he forgot to pinch his knees? Doubtful. Im willing to bet he could be in a coma and would still pinch his knees. Its called muscle memory
Gsp did the same thing with Hardy. I think he should of pinched his knees together too.
ahaha and werdum was just like...reeeeeaalllyyyy?
damn that hurts just looking at it
Maybe he's just so awesome and wasn't actually trying to armbr him. Maybe he was trying to submit him with his chi OR maybe he was trying to submit him by taking a dump on his arm. I dunno I'm not Werdum. Agree to disagree and move on.
Big congrats to Vinny. Big win man!
since some peapole get mad when you talk about jiu jitsu, do you think Renato could rape Vinny?
