I was laughing hard until I saw this vid.. then I felt sorry for the guy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZgVKgJpkr0
Wow! I'm nobody! to question the people who signed off on that guys blue belt cert but can somebody explain to me how that works?
It's interesting.
I have mixed feelings. On one end of the spectrum, the mats never lie. His objective skill level is just his objective skill level and all the criticism he receives, regardless of how cruel, is real. I don't feel guilty for laughing.
At the same time though, who am I to say what jiujitsu is to him? Jiujitsu is really what you make of it and it has clearly changed this man's life for the best. Ironically, despite the criticism and ridicule jiujitsu truly benefits people, like the guy in the video, the most. It was really made for normal people to change their lives not for sport and not for MMA macho posturing or even the goofy inverted rolling heel hooks that I keep trying during live sparring. I'd imagine that people laugh at me when I blow a flying heel hook.... hmm....
If Rener belts him it's legit. That being said, I'm watching more videos for a laugh.
Every belt an achievement, make no mistake about that. For me, a belt is kind of like a degree in higher education. You earned it, and no one can take it away.
Funny videos. I actually started to relate with the dude. He has that same passion that we have. Awesome!! I'm actually gonna give him real critique on youtube because there were some major holes in his game.
Yeah, why can't people give him correct technique instead of laughing? At least he's actually made the effort to start training and lost a lot of weight. It's only a Blue Belt, let him get on with it.
If he had a Black Belt (or even a purple belt) on, it'd be another thing, but cut the guy some slack. Maybe he posted this before a tournament to give people the wrong idea and he actually smashes fools.
I guess it depends who you get your blue from. I know where I'm at, blues don't come easy.
I thought it was developed as a martial art. Either way, I agree, BJJ is a great lifestyle change. I've never been this consistent with any sport/exercise regiment. I really feel like my quality of life has improved. Not to tout this like religion, but it's made me a better guy overall. So, yeah his belt would be dubious in certain gyms, but if that's how Rener ranks, that's how Rener ranks. I doubt he's trying to win the mundials. Not every guy who plays basketball is trying to reach the NBA. Some people just play because they love it. It's the same with BJJ.
And regardless, the truth is 7/10 times, a trained guy will beat an untrained guy. I've seen it so many times. I remember a hood dude in my school got torn up (broken arm included) by some nice kid from the wrestling team who got tired of being bullied. In the end, this benefits him for his health and he's learning basic self defense. More power to him.
That being said, that video is pretty damn bad. LOL.
Rick, you have a black belt in positivity my friend. I love your attitude.
I can't watch the whole video but from what I did watch it looks like they are trying to "slow roll". Good for them. I can't laugh at a person for trying to better themselves. I love jiu jitsu for many reasons. But one of the main reasons is it gives me a reason to give a shit about me. As a father and husband I get so lost sometimes in my roles and duties to my family that I forget that I need to care about me also. Jiu jitsu provides that for me. I'll never be a bjj champion, I'll probably never have a black belt in bjj. Those aren't my goals. I train because I love the game. I love to learn, and I love what little bit of competition it gives me. So I won't laugh at this guy, because he's doing SOMETHING. Whether or not his blue is warranted is not for me to judge. If he heads to a gym where the blues smash him maybe it will matter to him, maybe it won't. But kudos to him for starting something and sticking with it and being proud enough about himself to share it with the world.
I a happy that he has found something that he is passionate about... but if the guy plans on teaching.. idk who am i to judge i guess.
????? Stronger? This isn't a weightlifting sport. It's a recognition that one's skill has advanced. So it's symbolic to that advancement. It is what it is. A symbol of accomplishment. If you do your history on belts, you'd realize that it wasn't a group decision. It was one master who used it as a means to motivate his students by providing them a visual representation of their progress.
I can't help it. I am starting to like the Caterpillar.
Hmmm...weak technique vs strong technique....but wait, that sounds like.....progress.....something the belt symbolizes.
There are lower ranked belts in boxing until you get the big leagues that show your progress and rank. For example, a new guy isn't going to walk in and win the IBF welterweight belt. Boxing just ranks differently. But there is a measure of progress to determine what level a person is at. :) It's pretty unfair to say BJJ belts aren't won either. A lot of BJJ teachers require competition as evidence of competence.
But I already see where this is going. You're right. The world is wrong. I guess we agree to disagree.
Do you train?
Usually losers with no rank are the ones that say it doesn't matter, to be honest. Heh, kind of funny how that works out.
??? There are lower ranked belts that expirement and improvise all the time. Braulio Estima even says some of his lower belted students teach him on occasion when they have an idea for improvement. Eddie encourages evolution all the time and doesn't ignore you even if you're a white belt.
Either you don't train, or you have crappy teachers.
lol at the caterpillar breaking shit down into logic fallacies he learned in Community College in 1912.
Maybe not black yet, but both my belts were won. I won two blue divisions in tournies, got my blue. Won two purple divisions, got my purple. Guess what im gonna have to do to get my brown? probly mma.
And although I cherish my belt and respect others, especially when under badsses, Ive known a couple really,really good white belts that force me not to underestimate anyone, untill they give me reason too besides a 'whitebelt' label. If their knowledge isnt up to par, so be it, then the label fits. But there are several whites around here and on this site that are just misleading.
Nice job avoiding your statement and listing INDIVIDUALS. Hierarchical systems is how society has evolved, and is the only way it is run today. Individuals have no power then say a group of them being led in an organized manner by a leader. Ranking is everything, a sign of control and influence. For example; your comments as a white belt will be held to a much lesser value on a BJJ technique or subject than if a black belt were to say it. That is fact. If you were to advertise you were doing a seminar, listed as a white belt, how many would show up? Belts and rank matter, like it or not.

Eddie knows more than I do. He knows more than most of his students. That being the case, he is an authority on the subject. Nothing false about it. But the point still stands that this "heirarchy" allows plenty of room for evolution.
Awesome, so how is it that a blue will do one thing, and a purple or brown would do something more advanced? Progress? Something that the belts represent?Quote:
No it does not. Blue belts often have stronger singular submissions as they have fewer tools, were a purple or brown belt will let it go, or use it as a set up.
The ranking is different. There may be no physical progress belts given by coaches, but a coach does still assess your ability. Especially when they recommend you to go pro. There's still a ranking system. There's still a measure of progress which your teacher assesses. The only difference is that there is no visual marker of progress where in BJJ there is. Either way, there is still what you call a "heirarchy" between student and teacher.Quote:
You just made my point. Lower ranked belts (lesser value) There are no progress belts given by coaches. Those belts are all contest belts. The value was in winning.
Again, apples an oranges. In BJJ the belt is more a marker of knowledge. A boxing belt is a marker of competition. Both serve their purpose. But each sport is ranked differently.Quote:
They are still awarded, not won. I can't walk into a BJJ tournament as a wrestler and win a prize of a black belt. Its never happened.
Vast parts of the world believe in a rip off of judaism invented by a pedophile 500 years after the "zombie god" came around. Vast parts of the world also believe in a huge random explosion that rearragned molecules into complex life forms. Anything can be made to sound stupid.Quote:
The world population are ignorant about a great many subjects. Vast parts of the population believe in a Jewish Zombie God.
An Appeal to Mass conformity is not a logical argument.
And I never appealed to mass conformity. Just pointing out your type. You're right. The world's wrong.
If we can leave the rest behind....what do you train? What's your lineage? Would you tell your teacher that their belt is worthless? That the marker they used to assess your progress is meaningless?Quote:
Longer than you have been alive.
Bad logic is bad. Half of those people trained under someone. Others were just geniuses. The thing is, not everyone can be a born master. So the examples you've given don't quite work. These geniuses become teachers.
Carlos and Helio became teachers. They used belts to assess progress. You don't get a belt for graduating 8th grade, but it still feels like an accomplishment.
I mean, on a side note....how else would you determine progress? If we have competitions, how would we differntiate between the advanced and the novices?
I may quit responding. I'm sure we can all agree you're on some strongly opinionated self righteous type BS. I think I should leave this alone. Pretty sure I'm being trolled.
This guy has claimed in another thread he trains at 10th Planet Headquarters yet no one has verified it. It was kind of like people were scared to question it. He has made some bold claims saying he was raving in the 80's during the initial dub step era, then traveling through Europe in the 90s. This would make him about 50 if he was about 20 years old during any of those claims. I think this guy is a fraud and if someone can verify he trains there, I would like to meet this guy as I will be there in a few couple weeks.
In this thread he says he's in the UK: http://www.10thplanetjj.com/threads/...MMA!-Too-funny
Stuff doesn't add up.
It is Scott.
My guess is he's just a lonely fellow. We need these type of guys to balance out the rest of us. This guy I don't feel sorry for tho. Trolling gets you no friends.
How's this for logic:
if(you_troll == true)
{
you_get_no_love_or_respect = true;
I_will_talk_to_you_again = false;
