There are times when dlr & spiral are important in Mma. When a great wrestler doesn't want to stand with you and he doesn't want to get in your guard either. He takes you down, stands up and throws leg kicks and big downward punches while standing. Look at rosholt/Horwich 2. Rosholt found a spot to beat Horwich. Since then Horwich has been working on mastering dlr & spiral in case that ever comes up again.
Other than that scenerio, rubber guard is best for Mma. The best defensive guard and the best offensive guard wrapped into one IMO :)
i disagree slightly, i think that having a super good clinch game and closed guard game etc is very important but like so many other situations you want to at least try at first to finish the guy without him getting close, same in stand up same in army tactics, and probly in lots of other scenarios. if you can finish the opponent without them getting close then you would. open guard game is very important, equally important as closed guard game. you want to be able to keep your opponent out but when they get in, then you want to know what to do as well. which is where closed guard game comes in. its just another facet of the game. to be great you have to have top game and bottum game and you need open gard and closed guard.
as eddie said, it gives you more options and i think it compliments closed guard work perfectly.
i do agree though that i wasnt throwing punches so it couldve been different, dunno.
and no i dont have videos of him on hand.
