I would try Daly City. Hayward and San Leandro can a bitch to commute from in the morning plus the bridge toll is $6 before a certain time. It's at least a hour commute in the morning when without traffic it's like a 20 minute drive. Alameda is also close enough and there are nice parts of Oakland. If you live in the East Bay commute can get pricey so it's good to eliminate distance. I hope you find a nice place and welcome to the Bay Area. :)
Daly city is about 10-15 minutes from my academy.

Yeah BART is more convenient and faster most of the time, depends what stop your getting off really. If you're getting off at the financial district you probably would want Montgomery or Embarcadaro or Powell Street at the furthest. It depends if you leave early enough and make all the trains on time you can get there in 35 minutes with the stops I think. I take Rockridge (in North Oakland), not sure where you live in Oakland now but I make it to the Mission in like 25 minutes pretty regularly when I worked in SF, and I think that's Denny's academy exit if you are taking BART.
