Then we'll see you there.
A couple of things that we have in the works for the weekend already:
1. Sports/Competition Psychology sessions with Lonnie Jones. Lonnie is a private counselor and is also one of our Blue Belts, as well as being a very accomplished public speaker. This will be a keynote session with Q&A afterwards.
2. Muay Thai sessions with Ray Haizlip (one of our new striking coaches).
3. Wrestling takedowns and takedown defense with 3 Time State Champion Matt Watson.
Are we still going to have a tournament for the 40 people ?
I think so. Not an invitational like we've been doing at some of the other camps, though. We're not looking to crown a champion necessarily; we're looking to improve the competitors. So I was actually thinking of holding a sub-only tourney and a points tourney just to get the experience in for everyone.
Not really sure how I want to do this yet. I'm 100% open to suggestions, though.
That's sounds awesome. I'm in. Anything I can do to put myself under pressure. Tired of this competition anxiety. I'll be honest, prob. won't be good at the points tournie unless I get the sub, but I'm down to do it!
Becoming comfortable with the pressure and then learning to use it to your advantage is what we are after here.
I want to do the points tourney because that's what we have here. It drives me absolutely nuts when I hear people complain about losing in a points tournament and blaming the rule set. You knew what the rules were when you signed up. If you don't like the rules, that's perfectly acceptable; don't play. If we are gonna play in points tournies we should learn to navigate within the rule set in such a way that we have familiarity, comfortability, and even possibly an advantage over other organizations and their competitors.
That is a great idea! There are schools around here who have students who only play for points. They won't even go for submissions but stall out if they are ahead by a takedown. I play a bottom heavy game so I need to rely on sweeps at the last minute for points if I am down and unable to get the sub. As much as we think points tournaments suck, it is what we are stuck with.
I understand we have to some what accept the points tournaments, but we really just have to up our game all around find our our tactics to use against stall artists, etc. That's why I'm so excited about this camp. But I really don't like the idea of winning by points, I'll be honest. I've won by points before and it's not the winning that I'm trying to achieve, it's submitting.
